Finnrey Short: Cursed House
Shout-out to @x-wingp1lot @avada-matata @scottmccute for all the wacky ideas we come up with at Finnrey Creative Wednesdays.
@finnreyfridays Happy Halloween
The night was still young and the house was quiet. Room by room was filled with silence. If you listened close, you could hear a faint noise. Follow that noise into one small living room where the noise got louder. Look to it’s source, and you would see the creatures on tv chasing it’s victims throughout the screen. From that screen, gave a small light. A light that barley showed the two faces on the other side of the room, huddled against each other with a single blanket held tight.
“Ah!” they both screamed when they saw the creature caught it’s victim. They both calmed once the credits rolled, marking the end of the movie.
“That’s it?” Rey asked dropping the blanket on their laps. “That’s a terrible ending. They didn’t escape.”
Finn stood up and brushed the popcorn crumbs off his lap. “Yeah that was rough.”
Rey leaned back against the couch, getting her mind back to reality now that the movie was over. “What made you want to watch a horror movie tonight anyway?”
“I don’t know,” Finn said turning on the lights, “Everyone at work was talking about horror movies today for some reason.
“Oh, weird.”
Rey nearly jumped out off the couch when the door bell rang.
“Jeez Rey don’t scare me!” Finn said clutching his chest. “It’s just someone at the door.”
Yet, Finn still hesitantly turned the knob and open the door slowly. What he saw made his eyes pop.
“Trick or Treat!”
Finn blinked a couple times at the kids in costumes before him. He turned back to Rey who mouthed
‘Oh crap!’
Finn turned back to the kids with a nervous smile. “Alright great costumes. Just uh, one second...”
He slammed the door and jumped into the middle of the room. “It’s Halloween?”
“Damn how did we forget this?” Rey whispered, not wanting the kids to hear.
“Well what are we gonna do? We don’t have any candy?”
The bell rang again.
“One second!” Rey called out before turning back to Finn. “Okay just grab something. Maybe a banana.”
“A what?” Finn nearly yelled. “Do you want to them egg our house? We’re not giving them fruit.”
Rey groaned, “Well I guess we’re just gonna have to tell them we don’t have anything.”
Finn stopped her from walking any further. “Rey are crazy? This is Halloween, kids live for this day. We can NOT give them nothing.”
“Fine!” she whispered as loud as possible. She looked around the room franticly until her eyes landed on the bowl sitting on the coffee table. “The popcorn. We’ll bag it up and give it them.”
“Good idea,” Finn said, following her into the kitchen.
The doorbell rang again.
“We’re coming!” Finn called out. “Man their getting impat...Rey why are you going under the sink?”
“Don’t we keep the small bags down here?” Rey asked, opening the doors below the sink.
“No! We don-”
Finn stopped when Rey pulled out a bag of Snickers. She looked at him annoyed.
“I thought we agreed to diet together,” Rey said.
“We did,” Finn tried to reason. “These are in moderation.”
“Well then,” Rey stood up, “Now the kids will have something to enjoy.”
The doorbell rang again
And again
And again
“Alright!” They yelled out, marching up to the door to stop the constant ringing. Finn turned the knob.
“Look, we said one-”
He stopped when he saw no kids at the door. Instead stood a tall figure dressed in all black. Black boots, black pants, black shirt, even a black cape. Finn went to meet it’s eyes but instead of a face, was a black helmet with an engraved face, one that almost looked cartoonish.
“Uh, yeah. How old you?” Finn asked.
The person gave no response. They just breathed deeply and held up a plastic pumpkin half way full of candy.
“Wait a minute,” Rey said, moving pass Finn to get a better look at their visitor. “Ben?”
“No!” the man yelled in a dramatically deep voice. “I am not Ben. I am Kylo Ren. And I demand candy.”
Finn nudged Rey’s shoulder, “Ben, as in your cousin? Isn’t he in his 30s?”
Rey sighed, “Yeah probably dressed as one of the characters he made up, again,” she said before turning her attention back to her cousin. “Look Ben, we’ve been telling you for years your too old to Trick or Treat.”
“I am not Ben. I am Kylo Ren!”
“Okay Ben,” Finn cut in, looking at the costume. “I just have to know, why does a robot need a cape?”
“It doesn’t matter!” Ben yelled in his forced deep voice while waving his plastic pumpkin. “Give me candy now or feel my wrath!”
Finn didn’t directly respond to Ben’s rudeness. He took one of the candy bars and unwrapped it slowly, keeping his eyes on Ben the whole time.
“THAT KING SIZED SNICKERS BELONGS TO ME!” Ben yelled, clutching his plastic pumpkin.
Finn didn’t listen. He brought the chocolate to his mouth and bit it. Chewing it before Ben. With no words said, Finn passed half the bar to Rey who took a bite as well. He turned his attention back to Ben and narrowed his eyes.
“Come get it.”
Ben dropped the pumpkin, spilling out all the Jolly Ranchers and Twizzlers
“You don’t know the power I posses. On this night, you will know fear of the dark side.”
Rey grabbed the edge of the door, done with the conversation. “Whatever Ben!”
“I am not Ben. I am Ky-”
Rey slammed the door shut and strolled to the living room exhausted. “Ugh, I have the weirdest family ever.”
“Yeah but,” Finn said, finishing his candy. “What was that about? Sounds like he was cursing us or something.”
“Oh Finn don’t start,” Rey said, dropping on the couch. “You’ve always been superstitious. Ben’s childish and there’s nothing to be afraid off.
Just then, the doorbell rang and Rey jumped into Finn’s arms.
“Will you stop doing that that,” Finn said, regaining his composure.
“Sorry. Must of been because of that movie we watched,” Rey said, backing up. “I hope those are more kids at the door and not Ben.”
They grabbed their candy and walked up to the door again. This time they opened the door to see a new group of kids.
“Trick or Treat!”
Finn and Rey graciously handed out the last of the candy and complimented the kids on their costumes before closing the door and going back to the living room couch.
“Well that was nice,” Rey said.
“Yeah. Now aren’t you glad I got tha-” Finn stopped when he heard a noise. “Did you hear that?”
Rey looked around to see what Finn was referring to. “Hear what?”
“It was like, beeping.”
Suddenly, the lights started to flicker on and off. Finn and Rey latched on to each other.
“What was that?” Finn asked, looking around at the now solid bright lights.
“I don’t know, maybe something with the electrical circuit,” Rey said.
“The creepy cousin of yours...”
“Finn, he’s crazy! He doesn’t have any stupid powers of the dark side,” Rey waved her hands dramatically.
Suddenly, the room went dark. The lights and TV were out, and all that could be heard was Rey’s scream.
“Rey stop doing that!” Finn moved her off him through the sight of his cell phone light.
Rey composed herself, not wanting to seem scared in front of her boyfriend. “My bad. Somethings must be wrong with circuit after all.”
“He said fear of the dark si-”
“Finn, don’t start. We just need to get to the basement to check the circuit.”
Finn and Rey made their way to the stairs, grabbing a couple flashlights from the cabinet on the way down. With limited sight, they walked down slowly. With each step there was a slight creaking of the wood, causing their heart beats to increase. The basement wasn’t very big, but the further they went in it was as though their small flashlights were being swallowed into the darkness.
Rey felt around the wall cautiously until she felt a cold metal plate. “Here it is,” she said, opening the circuit plate and setting her light down. “Finn, can you move your light over here so I can find the problem.”
“Right here?” Finn moved his light.
“No.”
“Here?” he moved the light again.
“No,” Rey said again. “Where my hands are.”
“Here?”
“No!”
Suddenly the doorbell rang and Rey jumped into Finn’s arms, nearly causing him to drop his flashlight.
“More Trick or Treaters,” Finn said to calm his girlfriend. “Come on. We’ll do this later, otherwise they’ll keep ringing the bell.”
Grabbing her flashlight, Rey followed Finn back up the step hesitantly. Their heart rates increased as the bell rang again while they moved through the dark.
Finally they made it to the door when and without thinking, the young couple wielded their flashlights as if they were swords. Finn put his hand on the knob and turned to Rey. She shifted her feet into a stance and gripped her flashlight tighter before giving him a nod.
Finn took a deep breath and swung open the door.
“Trick or Treat!”
Finn stood stunned. Rey walked up next to him, seeing their visitor.
“Dad?”
“Hey Rey!” Luke Skywalker greeted in his sage costume. “Why’d you cut the lights off? Are you trying to scare the kids away?”
Rey shook her head. “Something’s wrong with our electric circuit.”
“Ben came by cursed us,” Finn said.
Rey was about reject the idea, but Luke cut in.
“Oh is that what’s he’s doing? Leia sent me out to get him. I saw him running around the back, but I thought you two were with him.”
Finn and Rey looked at each other peeved.

“There he is!” Finn said, pointing to the grown man in the black costume pulling on the wires on the side of the house.
“What’s wrong with you?” Rey asked her cousin who dropped the wires now that he was caught.
Ben waved his fist high. “I warned you about not giving me the treats I desire!”
“That’s it Ben,” Luke pointed his staff at the grown man before him. “It’s past your curfew. Time for you to go home.”
“I am not Ben! I am Ky-”
Finn and Rey slammed the door shut once they got back inside, desperate to escape the noise.
“Rey,” Finn began, “You’re lucky I love you, because I had no idea what I was getting myself into before I met your family.”
“Oh I just want this night to be over,” Rey groaned, resting her head on Finn’s shoulder.
Suddenly the doorbell rang.
