“I don’t like the looks of this. It gives me the creeps.” A male WRO officer mutters and clinging his rifle to his chest.
“Relax. I don’t see any immediate threats.” Another officer gives the claps his hand over his shoulder. “You got this.”
The older soldier chuckles to himself. Rookies, they’re always so high-strung. Both men join the rest of their squad with a lone figure standing ahead of them. They creep along, takin in the massive skeleton that was once the powerful headquarters of the Shinra Company. Scraps of metal lay waste around beams that was its support. Some still stand tall while others lean in disarray, some bent and twisted with thin, green vines embracing smaller structures.
An almighty force that held the world in the palm of their hand, destroys in one night with nature slowly reclaiming what it lost as the Planet heals. The new officer gasps, hazel eyes shift from side to side upon hearing the ominous creak of rusting beams. He scrambles around, watching the desolate environment. Drab clouds cloak the sky, matching the shades of gray as the wastelands below. The young man swallows hard hurries to stay close to the group.
“How would you know that we’re safe? Monsters could be hiding in the shadows!”
“Can you boys knock it off? The Captain is waiting for us.” A female officer chides her cohorts, silencing them with little effort. The trio joins the five other officers gathered around their leader. One of the men in the front takes a step closer to her. “What’s our next objective, Captain Halcyon?”
Their leader, a young woman donning the beige uniform, her left eye shielded by an eye patch, her red beret indicating her status rests on her head. Harmony stands in silence for a moment longer with her glove-clad hands held behind her back. She doesn’t see anything suspicious that led to the team answering the calls to investigate the headquarters’ grave. Not yet.
“Let’s secure the area and search for any anomalies.” Harmony takes a step forward, her head shifts from on side, slowly moving to the other to scope her vision. The air is still with ominous silence, as though mourning for a legacy long lost is ongoing, no matter what it’s been only a few years since the edifice’s destruction. “The target could be anywhere. Stick together in pairs and be sure to have everything ready in case you need back-up.”
. A sigh leaves her lips as she knows she will need to search at a distance as well as nearby. That means she must take it off. Harmony’s hand reach around her head to unbuckle the straps that kept the patch in place. Her left eye is not like the right. Its sclera is pure black, the iris bright green with crosshairs replacing the pupil. The crosshairs enlarge and constrict as it gains focus on her surroundings. Then, Harmony puts the patch away and takes out her handgun from its holster, preparing it in case there’s an attack. “Let’s move.”
Her team acts on her order without hesitating. They have already arranged who will be in pairs during the investigation. A series of frantic calls to WRO sparked this visit. Reports of an entity lurking in Midgar’s remnants where it’s off-limits gave reason to investigate and capture the entity. It could be relevant to what transpired years ago when a heroic general went insane and the ruins may still hold secrets that WRO mist recover before it gets into the wrong hands.
Harmony takes another deep breath and makes her way down a path further into the ruins. She’s on guard, knowing anything or anyone can be around. Who knows what lurks in these shadows.
