FFX|V: The Lost Memories
Chapter 2
Ara'digm walked through the gates to the grand city of Ul'dah. The city looked to be mostly composed of brick and stone creating towers and buildings that seem to rise far above his head and into the sky which was clear. The city streets were bustling with the noise of traders, adventurers, and common folk of all different races trying to make their daily coin.
The short Lalafells, the cat like Mi'qoute, always gracing you with a smile, the Roegadyns who are not only tall and stout but also look intimadating tho they would be some of the heartiest and kindest people you would ever meet, the Hyurs; the common man, who take on all tasks, and Elezen, the elves, noble and elegant. All races talking, laughing, and trading and needless to say, the sight of it all made Ara'digm a bit overwhelmed.
"Hey you there," a voice called over, "Fresh off the carriage are you?"
Ara'digm looked over, "Whose asking?"
"Wymond my name, and knowing people business is my game."
"You don't know me," Ara'digm said sternly.
"Look, what if i was to offer you some invaluable advice by a way of welcome to our fair city."
"No thanks," Ara'digm waved him off.
"Free of charge even?" Wymond pleaded.
Ara'digm stared at him. Wymond grinned from ear to ear. "I'm leaving."
Ara'digm said loudly began to walk away.
"You'll need me, you wait and see." Wymond shouted.
Ara’digm began to wonder the large city passing by the Sapphire Avenue Exchange which was a bazaar of all kinds of goods. There was even a market board which could allow a person to put up items to be sold and crafters as far as the eye could see, everyone working hard and selling their wares for the days coin.
Ara'digm continued on and noticed the avenue ended at another gate to the city, he turned around and decided to go the other way. He took his first left into what looked like some back alleyways. There he saw the rougher side of Ul'dah. The poor, the beggars. and the orphaned. He walked slowly through, taking in the plight of these people and how he wished he could do something for them. Ara'digm coin purse was quite limited.
He continued on with his head down. As he continued on he noticed a bright crystal, sort of one he saw in his vision, and then he realized.
"AH. I FORGOT TO ATTUNE TO THE AETHERYTE!" he yelled out loud at himself.
"Oy shut it," one of the brass blades standing post yelled back.
Ara'digm ran through Ul'dah trying to find the main Aetheryte. He berated himself for forgetting. He kept going and run up some stairs leading him into the higher part of Ul'dah, and the higher he got, he noticed that there was some red carpet that had been laid down, he continued on and ran down some other stairs, he ran around some more until he realized that he was completely lost.
"This place is one big circle," he said to no one, crouched and out of breathe.
"Indeed it is sir." a voice agreed with him.
Ara'digm looked up to see a tall Elezen female. she wore a light blue top with long gloves that matched, a dark leather mini skirt, thigh high boots and carried a book at her side. She was pale, like most of her kind, with her side bangs down and and her middle bangs pulled back. she wore glasses and had pretty blue eyes.
She continued, "You look fairly new, are you lost?"
"Yes. I am." Ara'digm said in between breathes.
"Why don't you take a moment."
Ara'digm took a deep breathe and slowly let it out. "I- I'm new here, just arrived actually, and I sort of realized I forgot to attune to the main aetheryte."
The Elezen chucked. "Well how about I show you around, I too am some what new, but I've just joined the Arcanist guild and am finally getting my bearings."
"Oh sure, thanks." Ara'digm smiled.
"I'm Persepha Dierona. But you can call me Percy."
"Ara'digm Monda'el. Ara normally suffices. Nice to meet you."
She bowed, "Likewise."
Percy showed Ara'digm around for a bit. Showed him the where he could see the Sultana, the difference between the Ruby and Sapphire Avenues. He was able to attune to the main and sub aetherytes and learned where all the guilds in Ul'dahs were.
"So any idea what you want to be?" Percy asked.
"Ive thought about becoming a pugilist." Ara'digm looked down at his fists. "I would like to protect the people of this world. And sometimes I wont have a weapon to do so."
"Ah well its quite late now and they are closed, but you should check in tomorrow."
"I will," Ara'digm assured her.
"Well I should retire," she paused, "Ara do you have a place to stay?"
"Er- no," he confessed
"To the Quicksand it is then." Percy directed Ara'digm to a aetheryte and they vanished and then reappeared at the main one, she then directed him right across the way and there Ara'digm took his first footsteps into what seemed to be almost a pub, there was a walk way that circled the entire large room, in the middle was a bunch of chairs and tables, straight on the other side was a few service desks.
"Follow me," Percy led the way and Ara'digm followed.
She led him to the middle kiosk. There a Lalafell with her hair put up stood. She was attending some documents.
"Why hello there Percy! And who might your friend be?" she asked.
"Hi Miss Momodi, this is Ara'digm, he's new in town and will be needing to join the Adventurers Guild and a place to stay."
Ara'digm smiled.
"If You're looking for the Adventurer's Guild, you've come to the right place. As you just heard, my names Momodi- no need to put a "Miss" in front of it- and I own this fine establishment if you please. I also manage the Adventure's Guild here in Ul'dah. So you might say that looking after new adventurers like yourself is my vocation. Without someone like me to steer you right, you'd soon find yourself out in the middle of nowhere, caught up in business you don't understand."
"Oh?" Ara'digm inquired.
"Well there is our conflict with the Amalj'aa for example. They've been plaguin' the Sultanate for nigh, oooh forever now. Then there is the Garlean Empire. None can say for sure what they're plottin' these days, only that they are."
"I see."
"Aye the people drink and make merry... but underneath it all there's worry, worry and a lingering feeling of loss. And little wonder. Its scarce been five years since the lesser moon cracked open like an egg, releasing an abomination intent on turnin' the realm into an eighth hell."
Ara'digm looked at her. Confused.
"You do know about it right?" Momodi stared into Ara'digm's hyurian eyes. "So much was loss in the blink of an eye. Twas like the end of the world had come at last. But then things get foggy. Everyone's got their own version of what happened next- some of em, two or three..."
Ara'digm took a moment to process this. Something in him clicked. A unknown light bulb turned on. Ara'digm had no recollection of the last five years, none. In fact he didn’t even remember why he had come to Ul’dah. All he remembered was light calling him
Ara'digm looked at both Momodi and Percy, "Do you have any recollection of what happened?"
"You'd think people would remember somethin' like that- but the fact is, they don't. Nobody does.” Momodi answered.
"I don't either Ara. Sorry." Percy looked down.
Momodi went on "Look, there is one thing the survivors agree on though: the part played by a band of adventurers who laid down their lives for a realm that wasnt their own. They fought valiantly and like so many others they never returned. Deeds worth rememberin', Im sure you'll agree. It's just a shame our recollections of the those brave heroes are as jumbled as those of the calamity itself."
Her words started to fade away, "Whenever we try to call their faces to mind, it's like they are standin' between us and the midday sun, permanently silhouetted...It's bloody infuratin'-"
Ara'digm head began to throbbed and then he faded into blackness.
