🚨 Plagiarized Fic Alert ‼️

This was not how I was planning on spending my evening, but here we are…again.

It appears that Tracing constellations by author Honeyytheeater (who has just started publishing in the past week) is plagiarized from dancing with the devil by wastelndivy in another fandom. It appears to be a “copy-paste-lightly edit” style of plagiarism, but it’s clearly recognizable as the same work.

I’ve left a message for the original author on their original work and reported the plagiarized work to AO3 (which takes about 2 months before they get to it), but please be aware of this and spread the word.

Please do not comment bomb/gang up/launch a mob attack on the plagiarist, because that is against the AO3 code of conduct.

Please do not submit anyone’s work to AI/chatbot or other forms of online “plagiarism detectors” without permission; if you can’t determine whether something is plagiarism yourself, ask a friend.

What is it about Hosie that makes us such a fertile ground for plagiarism and fic theft?! that_one_urchin, mikaelsonsblood, the_lemony_kind/limon_skittles/Watermelon_Sugar95/Waverlys_Gurlfriend/ChereBayou, itsdarkhosie, and now Honeyytheeater 😢

Fic Thief Update

I have officially submitted a complaint against DarkFaerie0 for breaking AO3's TOS, due to their plagiarism of Ducky-san's "Capsize," posted seven years ago on FFN. I don't know how long it takes for these cases to be processed, but I know it won't be immediately, which is why I'm posting here.

I reached out to Ducky-san, who's been inactive for 7 years and received no response. I then reached out to DarkFaerie0, asking them as nicely as I could to do the right thing and take the stolen work down before I reported them. Instead of being a decent person, they deleted my comment and blocked me, also restricting their work. The funny thing is that I can still see the work, though, and reporting it is still just as easy as it was before they blocked me. So I did, providing evidence and recounting this whole scandal.

I'm saying this now: do not engage with that work. Do not leave kudos. Do not bookmark it. Do not read it. That is not DarkFaerie0's work. That is Ducky-san's work, that was shamelessly stolen. I now know beyond a shadow of a doubt that DarkFaerie0 stole that work. I might have had the benefit of the doubt for a moment, but blocking me and deleting my comment holding them accountable was all the proof I needed. Please do not support a thief willing to steal someone's work for clout, not even for a good read.

Capsize by Ducky-san is still up on FFN. It was not taken down. It's still there to read (though I think FFN is down for now--it should be up again soon).

I implore you if you have read or commented on that fic to delete your comments and bookmarks to it. This person doesn't deserve the attention they've stolen from Ducky-san. They refuse to accept accountability, even after being asked nicely. They attempted to hide from what they did by blocking me and deleting my comment, but they can't hide from the facts.

And when the fic is inevitably taken down, I hope we can all celebrate and read some nice, ethically sourced GA fanfic for our troubles, entirely guilt free. :)

Does anyone know how I can contact angelstheyarefalling from Wattpad? They posted one of my fics on it without my permission, and I have been commenting for months, asking for them to take it down. Wattpad won't do shit because I can't report it with all the info they want and definitely don't need. I have proof that it is mine. They even say it is mine. 🙄

this person has written a few dragonball fics, and their works are currently being posted by a fic thief. We need to get the thief to stop, as this is not right.

Fighting against fic thiefs

Wow, @everydayisonfire you’ve been busy! Great job! You’re amazing!!

I had a long (bad) day, but for the last couple hours I’ve been enjoying some Malec fics and at the same time been checking for stolen ones. Many of you have probably realized this already, but just in case you were too tired or pissed off about this whole thing to think of it, here’s a way to look for stolen fics. One easy way is to simply use Google sentence search.

Take one or two consecutive sentences (Google only uses the first 32 words though!) from the fic and simply google it. Works ok, especially if you take sentences with characters’ names or some words/terms unique to the fic/fandom. Of course this is not a perfect search function (because Google’s algorithms work in a mysterious ways sometimes...) and it’s not possible to find stolen fics if the thief has tampered with the fic and for example changed location or character names. But it’s a quick way to see where Google finds your fics.

Just remember, authors may use different user names on different platforms, so let’s try to always first ask politely. I would say many of the thiefs are younger fans who don’t know/care about the rules in the world and that’s annoying, yes, but it gives the fandom a better image if we take care of these things in an “adult way”.

At least at first.
