Having hot chocolate on Christmas morning was a treasured Munson tradition.
These days it was Eddie’s task to prepare it. He really forced himself to concentrate on the task so that the milk didn’t burn and stick to the kettle. He wanted for Wayne to have something nice before his shift at work, as Wayne always worked at Christmas for the extra money and this was the Christmas moment, since they would have no Christmas dinner. He knew that Wayne wouldn’t have said a thing even if it had been bad, but his uncle deserved to have it be nice.
This year they were once again sitting in the kitchen in cozy silence, Eddie in his pajamas and Wayne already in his work clothes. The hot chocolate was spicy and warmed both bellies and hearts as they sipped it. Eddie felt, as he always did, that he didn’t really deserve the fond look Wayne threw his way, he was far too much of a disappointment to earn it.
It was like any other Christmas morning, but neither knew that Christmas 1985 would be the last time that they would be sitting together in their trailer in Hawkins, having hot chocolate.
