my fave night vale aesthetic is imagining it as a kind of Nature Gone Haywire town- like a lab where nature tested all its weird ideas and then abandoned. biology knows no limits. stuff that shouldn’t be able to exist in a desert, thrives. autopsies of phenotypically ‘normal’ people reveals the presence of organs that shouldn’t exist in our species, or the absence of organs that should. each and every cactus is unique, and the thorns have individual patterns almost indicative of personalities. certain animals are seen according to certain phases of the moon and may even change colour of random body parts accordingly. at first glance everything seems to follow the usual rules of physics, but you pay attention for even a moment, and it feels like staring at a formula or equation with one little value copied wrong but you can’t pin down where the mistake lies. like, gravity’s all fine when everyone’s on their feet but Janice’s wheelchair runs with the same speed irrespective of friction or any external force, and everybody jumps just a few inches higher than they should be able to. chemistry is moody. a reaction that went perfectly yesterday seems to malfunction today for no apparent reason. sometimes detergent works just fine, but everyone has learned the hard way that on rainy days it eats through your clothes. ink turns to literal poison. of course, time is weird, but Carlos calculates that the sun seems to have cycles of its own (which means night vale regularly and uniformly changes its place), and the rocks are the most affected by it, changing their locations on their own, and producing different glows to different types and angles of light.   

and somehow, somehow, this seemingly unorganised mess manages to be coordinated and remain mostly functioning to a ridiculous extent.

I read Rottenfolk when you first published it and I’ve been in love with it ever since. I’ve reread it at least 6 times now and I recently had the time to read the Folk of the Air books. Thanks to you I am now obsessed with fae books and reading a whole book in just one to two days lmao.
