My Opinion on Fictional Archeologists
Here's a list I whipped up while playing Uncharted 2 today about my opinion on the Best and WORST fictional archeologists. . . now I'll stop thinking about it.
WORST: Hawkman.
Why? Because he is horrible at everything he does and is extremely boring. I don't think I've ever read anything starring Hawkman without being lulled into a deep sleep. He even has an interesting design, and then he starts talking about Hawkworld and ancient Egypt and I start flipping the page hoping for Metamorpho or some other comic book archeologist to take away the dull sting of boredom.
Sort of Lousy: Nathan Drake
Drake's a pretty great archeologist, but he has one big problem. As soon as he parkours his way into some lost temple everything just goes to shit. Even if it's not his fault, usually everything is ruined. Priceless artifacts destroyed. Say what you will about the other members of this list, but at least they sometimes get results besides "saved the world." Whatever that means.
Decent: Indiana Jones
He has a bad habit of letting his best discoveries get snatched away at the last moment by pricks or falling down bottomless pits. Unlike Drake, he has many major discoveries to his name and is not a thief. The dude also takes time out of his globetrotting to be a professor. The dude has got no mercy!
Pretty good: Aradia
She's a pretty good archeologist, especially since the spirits of the dead guide her to find neat stuff. But she has a bad habit of mishandling artifacts, and using ancient ruins to devise a game to bring about the end of the world accidentally. But you know, it wasn't on purpose!
THE BEST DAMN ARCHEOLOGIST IN THE WORLD: Scrooge McDuck
Yeah that's right. Scrooge McDuck. Scrooge McMotherfuckingDuck. Why? Because the man has defiled countless tombs. He's the richest duck in the world, not just because of keen business sense, but because of treasure hunting to the finest degree. The duck is brilliant. Curses, witches, convicts, and even other incredibly rich people cannot stop him from discovering ancient civilizations and the treasures they hold. He then has museum exhibitions of what he finds and becomes even richer. BAM SCROOGE McDUCK!
