Toastystats: Open Doors and FictionAlley

The OTW recently announced the import of FictionAlley to AO3 through the Open Doors project. Open Doors helps preserve fanworks by (among other things) importing external fanwork archives as collections on AO3. I was interested in the newsletter statement, “With approximately 29,000 works imported so far, it is Open Doors' largest import yet”—it made me curious about all of the work Open Doors has done over the years.

I am working on condensing the FictionAlley SCUSA Master Ship List (Pairing List) into a GoogleSheets. I have the list of ship names using the Wayback machine but the tagging, or shortened pairing names, are kind of hard to find if not listed on Fanlore or the Shipping Wiki. For example Harmony for Harry/Hermione is common but for less common pairing of Neville & Lavender is extremely harder to find. So what are any shortened pairing names that you know of other than Harmony, Drinny, Druna and Fredmione?

Fiction Alley Archive

Guys.

GUYS.

I just found out someone created an unofficial archive for FictionAlley, the former Harry Potter fanfic platform!

I really though it was gone for good  (though I’d saved a couple of favorite stories), and even though it’s a little harder to search in some ways (you can only search by title, not by anything in the summary), I’m still so excited to know it’s there!

Like, I spent so many late nights reading fic on there in middle school and high school. Like, before Half-Blood Prince and Deathly Hallows came out, so people were still using fics to theorize what was going to happen. 

Not to mention, so many hilarious MST fics where the Golden Trio or the Marauders read the books (anyone else remember those?!)

So, it’s really cool to see some part of it survived - though I know some of those fics got migrated to AO3, it’s not quite the same.

This Week In Fandom History → June 2001

Draco Sinister, the second fic in Cassandra Claire’s Draco Trilogy, is deleted from Fanfiction.Net due to plagiarism claims. A month later, Claire, along with Heidi8 (Heidi Tandy) and others, launches Fiction Alley Park, an independent and curated fanfiction site. The Draco Trilogy also birthed the trope of Draco in Leather Pants.

i might have found msscribe’s current instagram. i mean all of the info matches. delaware, rich lawyer husband, biracial, supports gay rights and fandoms, writes in a weirdly similar way.. i very shamelessly commented on one of her posts asking if she was msscribe. waiting for a reply.

Unfortunately, the age limit makes these pages impossible to archive using archive.org or even archive.is. I’m going to just have to download the html...

Tbh, msscribe’s stories aren’t all that interesting. They aren’t funny like My Immortal, and they were never popular or genre-defining the way Cassandra Claire’s stories were. They’re just... harry potter fanfiction, for better or for worse.
