Fiction Book Annotation
Hopkins, Ellen. Perfect. 1st ed. New York: Simon and Schuster, 2011. Print.
Summary:
Perfect by Ellen Hopkins reveals how poetry is one of the ultimate forms of expression. This is a perfect example of how poetry can not only change the way you view the world but also “pull on your heart strings”. Poetry can touch people in ways they have never even imagined. Perfect is a raw book in every sense, nothing is sweetened, you feel everything that the character is feeling. It is an example of just how poetry can cause you to connect. It also is a great example of how all poetry isn’t the same old boring style that many people think of poetry is far more complex than it is given credit. This also shows how poetry can in one way relate to all of us through experience because even though our teenage years were not hopefully as wild we have all been in a bad situation of some kind or had our heart break or wished some aspect of our life was different.
Evaluation :
I believe that this is bias because it is based off of personal experience to shape the book. However I believe that they did research to back the facts on issues that teens share throughout the world and then connected to them through poetry. It is helpful in the sense that it shows how poetry connects throughout the world by issues we all have experienced. However I don’t exactly think that this is very helpful to my project besides showing how to express things that happen to you through writing.
Reflection:
Poetry shapes the entire book. Within it their are multiple characters who each have their own story told through poetry and in their sections each end of a page has a lead into the start of the new page. Without the set up of the words and the way they play with your emotions this book would otherwise be too dark. Even though it is not based off writing itself it is easy to see how much editing the author went through to pick the perfect words, get each page to lead into the next, and for all the stories/poems to intertwine together. It also is an example of how poetry can be used a form of storytelling and forever preserving history through your eyes. To get your poetry out in the world is to have your voice, expressed in a way that shows perfectly how you view the world. Poetry is an insight into who you are beneath the surface.
