Perfect by Ellen Hopkins reveals how poetry is one of the ultimate forms of expression. This is a perfect example of how poetry can not only change the way you view the world but also “pull on your heart strings”. Perfect is a raw book in every sense, nothing is sweetened, you feel everything that the character is feeling. It is an example of just how poetry can cause you to connect. It also is a great example of how all poetry isn’t the same old boring style that many people think of. Poetry is far more complex than it is given credit. Poetry shapes this entire book. Within it their are multiple characters who each have their own story told through poetry and in their sections each end of a page has a lead into the start of the new page. Without the set-up of the words and the way they play with your emotions this book would otherwise be too dark. Even though it is not based off writing itself it is easy to see how much editing the author went through to pick the perfect words, get each page to lead into the next, and for all the stories/poems to intertwine together. It also is an example of how poetry can be used a form of storytelling and forever preserving history through your eyes. I created a tshirt for this assignment with different core words that express what has to be done to create a book like this. This book helped me a lot with being “accepting” of the editing process because poetry is such a personal thing to have another person “tear apart".

This is a video of pictures combined together that has taken part in creating my poetry for this capstone. Through the editing process of my work I learned a lot about poetry. This has taught me that everyone has their own idea of what "poetry is". We each develop a different idea of what it should be through our own personal experiences which is what makes it so important to get many different views. My editing process show by pictures doesn't do all the work put into this project justice. I started out with rough drafts of all my poems on paper because I personally think you get the best feel for poetry by writing it out by hand. Once I had written on all my poems out on paper I read them aloud because the tone and way that you read a poem makes it easier to tell where the pauses need to be placed and what needs editing. After I did that I made the edits myself, typed them all fine tuning A LOT of it along the way, and then sent them off to my four editors. In the end of getting all the edits for my poems as the author I was the one who made the final decision on how to edit my piece, making it more of my own work to be proud of.
I was told by one of my editors, Ken Szymanski, that you should always ignore at least 20% of editors suggestions because there should always be a part of your poem that you know for certain conveys the exact message that you said. I also learned through editing poems that it is the easiest way to "put yourself into the poem" because you are left with the constant question of what would I do to make this piece better if it were mine.
Most of the themes in my poetry were therapeutic because it was all experiences that I have had. Writing them down and making them into a poem made them seem like less of my problems and made it easier to find the solution to them. We could all use an outlet once in a while, no matter how great our problems are, and this process has only strengthened that thought in my mind.
Mid Research Review by Grace Espinoza
There is rhythm in everything we do. Rhythm and patterns shape the way that one goes about their daily life: poetry is the rhythm of the world. Poetry takes the experiences, places, and people and puts them in an entirely different light. Poetry is what can lead you to cope with things one never imagined, creates a new insight on the world, and puts emotions into words one never even knew they had. To be able to express oneself through poetry by developing their writing skills is the ultimate goal. Throughout this paper I will cover what I have learned so far on poetry, explain how all of the research pieces together, and lastly cover what I still need to do to get a full grasp on poetry.
Poetry is a part of everything: a first kiss, a sunset, or loss of a loved one. It is a broad topic because there are many different types from limericks to acrostic to free verse. The broadness of just poetry caused me to make my topic about developing one’s poetry writing skills and what importance lies in that. In the television episode I watched, I learned how doctors used Alzheimer’s patients to better their memories through writing poetry because they discovered emotions and things once forgotten. In addition to it helping Alzheimer’s patients, it also helped patients and family cope with disease, death, and the unknown. Throughout my nonfiction book, it covers how to encounter poetry and discover metaphors that are hidden within the text. It expresses how changing the shape of your poem, can affect how the reader reads it. It also covers how you can use dialogue throughout ones poetry to keep the reader involved. Through the middle of the book, you learn about how to use breaks, to change the entire style of your poetry by affecting the rhythm. As well as changing one’s breaks, it gave many suggestions of to how rhythm can be created. It also covers how to develop your “ear for poetry” and how reading poems in different ways can cause different perceptions entirely. In the final part of this book it covers how to use things such as a central image or a main idea to hold ones reader’s attention. Through my articles, it expressed how with poetry our history never dies. It is forever engraved. It also discussed how editing your poetry is essential for bettering it, starting with edits from oneself and then passing it onto others.
There is a common thread between almost everything in life. Even in opposites can one find a common link. The world that we live in is one of interconnectedness. For this research, each research avenue used led to the same idea of needing to edit poems to gain better writing skills. Whether it was to edit one’s own writing, to let someone else edit it, or to edit another person’s poetry entirely one benefits. Editing puts poetry into a different light causing one to be able to write in different ways, develop stronger images, and broaden one’s word choice. From using it for cancer patients and their families, to an article based off events that were hard to cope with until they wrote, and to the book which covered self-expression showed another large connecting theme throughout all of the research was how poetry helps us cope with day to day life and the things that catch us off guard.
Poetry has an endless amount of things within it to connect all of us through the human experience. Although a lot of research has already been gathered I still need to research more on the history of poetry and how it has developed over time. I will look at a few different famous writers to see what is about them that made them so successful and the techniques they use throughout their writing. After learning techniques I will use them to write my own poetry to show the skill I’ve gotten one step closer to mastering. For viewing authors writing styles I will interview an author I greatly admire and use the techniques he shares with me; for the history I will show the development in a painted mural. To get a larger grasp on all the things I’ve researched in this project,I will get the point of view of others as well as multiple sources.
Throughout this paper, I covered what I have learned so far on poetry, explained how all of the research pieces together, and lastly covered what I still need to do to get a full grasp on poetry. To be able to express oneself properly and articulate what one wants through words is the ultimate form of expression. To know how to use ones words concisely does more than one could imagine: saves one from trouble, immortalizes a memory, or puts to rest a heartache. We are always searching for the right words to say and they are generally just on the tips of our tongues. Poetry is the words lingering within waiting to be freed. To become a better writer the first step is to pick up a pencil and just write what comes to mind, the time is now.

Hopkins, Ellen. Perfect. 1st ed. New York: Simon and Schuster, 2011. Print.
Summary:
Perfect by Ellen Hopkins reveals how poetry is one of the ultimate forms of expression. This is a perfect example of how poetry can not only change the way you view the world but also “pull on your heart strings”. Poetry can touch people in ways they have never even imagined. Perfect is a raw book in every sense, nothing is sweetened, you feel everything that the character is feeling. It is an example of just how poetry can cause you to connect. It also is a great example of how all poetry isn’t the same old boring style that many people think of poetry is far more complex than it is given credit. This also shows how poetry can in one way relate to all of us through experience because even though our teenage years were not hopefully as wild we have all been in a bad situation of some kind or had our heart break or wished some aspect of our life was different.
Evaluation :
I believe that this is bias because it is based off of personal experience to shape the book. However I believe that they did research to back the facts on issues that teens share throughout the world and then connected to them through poetry. It is helpful in the sense that it shows how poetry connects throughout the world by issues we all have experienced. However I don’t exactly think that this is very helpful to my project besides showing how to express things that happen to you through writing.
Reflection:
Poetry shapes the entire book. Within it their are multiple characters who each have their own story told through poetry and in their sections each end of a page has a lead into the start of the new page. Without the set up of the words and the way they play with your emotions this book would otherwise be too dark. Even though it is not based off writing itself it is easy to see how much editing the author went through to pick the perfect words, get each page to lead into the next, and for all the stories/poems to intertwine together. It also is an example of how poetry can be used a form of storytelling and forever preserving history through your eyes. To get your poetry out in the world is to have your voice, expressed in a way that shows perfectly how you view the world. Poetry is an insight into who you are beneath the surface.

The book contrasts my research in the way it is a bit heavy/dramatic which sends the idea that poetry is dark and depressing which is many peoples current limited view point of it. However it compliments my research by showing how it can help us connect to others. The book was not based off a persons writing experience however which wasn’t as helpful to my topic.

This book gives me a different perspective to view poetry as a way of storytelling. One can use poetry to capture history in the way they felt, saw, and experienced it. It demonstrated how connected it can make you feel to the writer of the poetry. It also opened my eyes up to the way it causes you to relate to people that you would have otherwise deemed unrelatable.
