I got my hands on a CD by Isaac Lekach's first band when I was 11 or 12 years old. Their name was Buddy System Indeed. I sent them a letter and he sent me one in return along with their new CD. The letter informed me that the band was finished, but Isaac was going on a solo tour as "Poulain." A few years later, I caught him along with a full band in Woodstock, IL. I got to meet him, and it was a big deal for me because he was the person who first made me truly realize that anyone could write their own music, play in a band, and tour however they wanted. I have this guy to thank for making me want to do it myself.
Day #189 Recover - Snake Oil
Day: 189
Shirt: Recover - Snake Oil
Color: Black
Brand: American Apparel
Source: FUCK. did this band do some face melting in their day. I never heard of this band until i met this kid at my friend Amy's house who had his mouth wired shut. I asked why his mouth was shut and he said some dudes at a bar punched his cause he looked like either a girl or a homo (i forget which), but either way harsh. This kid must have weighed about 110 and 6 ft tall, he was skinny as shit and looked like he hadn't eaten in weeks. well i guess when your pitch is wired shut i guess you don't. Anyways turns out this kid was the singer of the band Recover. Im not going to lie, i judged this book by its cover here. I expected very little. Amy said this was her favorite band right now, and she was going to put out their EP. Again...still not holding my breath, i mean they were all nice dudes and everything, but they just looked so green and nice.
Fast forward to when EP comes out and i get a copy. Jaw hits floor. where does all this energy and power come from, jesus H Christ. I mean theses guys must have been maybe 18? and yet they had the balled up emotions and skills that most bands would never be lucky enough to have. At this point in this article if you have gotten this far go listen to the "this is not Recover" EP.
So then the Major Label pot starts to get stirred. greed gets involved, hands start appearing from everywhere than band all of a sudden has new famous friends, who want to "help" them out. The bidding war happens. and for what? so they can get put on a label with the Mars Volta, The Rapture, and Le Tigré only to fold months later and ruin their debut. that was a try bummer for me, imagine how the band felt.
Where is this band now? back on the same label that they probably never should have left, the one that made the amazing EP that started it all. I only hope this band can find the energy and draw from whatever it as that gave them the juice to make this music in the beginning.
