Vida Bali: Next Big Eco-Friendly Accessories Brand
FIDM Merchandising & Marketing and Business Management Graduate, Anastasia Pratna is the co-founder of Vida Bali, an eco-friendly collection of rattan and straw bags, totes, and backpacks that are handmade in her native Indonesia. Vida Bali also donates 10 percent of proceeds to saving the oceans.
Vida Bali was founded early in 2018 after Anastasia took a trip back to her native home, Indonesia. While she loves her home in Indonesia, she realized that there's litter everywhere: at the beach, in the oceans, and in the streets. After doing a bit of research on plastic pollution, she realized how little is being done to help the issue. Vida Bali was then founded with the goal to make an impact through fashion. Every factor of the brand is eco-friendly, even the packaging including the boxes, hang tags, and ink!
While wearing multiple hats to make Vida Bali run smoothly, Anastasia is also a Project Manager for a local apparel manufacturing in Los Angeles that works with brands such as Nordstrom, Pure Barre, Splits 59, and many more! When asked how she does it all, Anastasia says “Well it’s definitely not easy, but if you have the passion and you know you really want it, you work hard, nothing can stop you!”
Don’t forget to check out Vida Bali and their beautiful handmade bags!

FIDM Beauty Grad Jasmine Haffar Gets Hired at ColourPop Cosmetics
After graduating from FIDM with her Associates of Art degree in Beauty Industry Merchandising & Marketing, Jasmine Haffar landed a product development internship at ColourPop Cosmetics which soon turned into an actual job in the product development team. Keep reading to hear from Jasmine how she landed the job, what her day to day looks like, and how FIDM helped her get to where she is today.
Persistence is key! This is a phrase that helped Jasmine land her role within the ColourPop Cosmetics product development team. It all began with her attending the Beauty Innovators Study Tour with FIDM, where she got a behind-the-scenes look and a chance to meet executives from marketing, product development, creative, and sales who shared their advice on landing that first job or getting an entrepreneurial idea off the ground. During this, the FIDM students toured many beauty headquarters, including ColourPop Cosmetics, which is when Jasmine knew she wanted to work for the company. After sending in her resume and personally contacting the Product Development Manager at ColourPop Cosmetics, Jasmine was offered an internship to learn all she could from the Product Development team. At the end of her internship, Jasmine was offered a full time job as a Product Development Specialist for ColourPop Cosmetics.
As a product developer for ColourPop Cosmetics, Jasmine’s day to day work includes submitting lab requests, learning how to evaluate products sent front the lab, prepping for meetings, trend and competitive research, and develop possible new launches for ColourPop. For instance, she is currently planning the assortment for ColourPop’s holiday 2018 collection!
Jasmine is an extremely passionate and motivated individual which is how she got to where she is today. During her time in the Beauty Industry Merchandising & Marketing program, she says that all of the education and knowledge that she has gained has helped her so much in the industry and it has given her a greater appreciation. By expressing how much she wanted to learn and grow, opportunities came her way which led her to ColourPop. Jasmine’s advice to anyone who wants to work in the industry is to work hard and do everything you can to get to where you want to go in life.

Alexis Thiele Cofounds Jewelry Brand Millapani Inspired by Her South American Heritage
FIDM Merchandising & Marketing Graduate, Alexis Thiele, grew up in the city of Santiago, Chile. Before coming to attend FIDM, Alexis had a background in architecture, ballet, fashion, and technology which led her to co-found Millapani, a jewelry brand based in Chile and Los Angeles. Millapani showcases designs that feature a modern and sculptural take on ancient and native South American design and culture.
Millapani, which translates to golden lion from Mapudungún, the native Chilean tongue, specialize’s in one-of-a-kind, unique, and made to order jewelry that is created out of 18k yellow, rose, and white gold, as well as sterling silver. They make sure to use ethically sourced precious and semi-precious stones from all over the world. Their main inspiration is their native culture, architecture and nature that are found in Chile. Millapani strives to translate the essence of an ancient art and bring it into the contemporary world. The main goal of the jewelry brand is to make women feel powerful and strong as a lion, yet noble, precious and solid as gold.
Alexis Thiele thanks FIDM for helping her create her jewelry brand and get it to where it is today. She says that FIDM has been a big supporter and that meeting industry professional and having teachers who worked in the industry during her time at FIDM helped her create contacts she uses today.

International Student Amandine Garcia Says FIDM Instructors are La Creme De La Creme
International student Amandine Garcia graduated last quarter with her Fashion Design degree. She attended FIDM on a scholarship awarded by the Fondation Marcel Bleustein-Blanchet in France, and is diligently pursuing a career in costume design. We asked her to tell us about her favorite FIDM instructors, and this is what she said.
I have been in school in three different countries, but the teachers at FIDM are “la crème de la crème,” as we say in France. I had the chance to have the best teachers in the world this year, honestly. I don’t know if I can cite them all, but just to give you some of them, I had:
Mr. O’Connor for Pattern 1; there is no one nicer than he is.
Ms. Riegelman for Fashion Illustration; she is soooo talented and so sweet I loved every second that I spent with her.
Ms. Cook for Draping; she will push you to show your personality even in basic creations.
Ms. Young for Textile Science; you can’t find anybody more passionate about textiles and for sure she will teach you how to recognize them even if at first you have no clue of what you’re doing.
Ms. Montgomery for Pattern 2; she is so unique, she even brought us cookies in class and told me she would help me if I needed a recommendation for costume.
Ms. Jansen—she makes everything peaceful and is also so helpful; I have made my favorite creation in her class.
Mr. Walker—if you want to learn and laugh, he is the best.
Mr. Olvera for Business of Fashion; he makes it so interesting.
Ms. Owen will prepare you for the real world. Thanks to her the portfolio I created in her class earned me jobs offers. She cares so much about her students.
I know I have been the luckiest person in the world to have those incredible instructors and I miss them all already. Everybody was telling me, you must be so happy that you are graduating, but the truth is NO. Not at all, I am sad that I won’t go to this amazing school anymore, I loved it so much. I had the time of my life.

Los Angeles is the perfect place to learn how to become a costume designer for film or TV which is why FIDM offers a degree in Film & TV Costume Design. Students get to be taught by instructors that are from the industry, visit entertainment studios and major costume houses such as Warner Bros., and receive advice from Costume Designers like Mona May who worked on Clueless. This degree is a career kickstarter where students leave the program with a professional portfolio and experience collaborating with American Film Institute student directors.
The students were tasked to distressed sourced garments to emulate a character that had gone through situations that impact how their costumes would look. They took inspiration from movies such as Tarzan, Mad Max, Fast & Furious while some even created their own characters. Through different techniques, the students needed to express a story that the character would have gone through in their costume.
The students got creative to give the costumes a distressed look by fraying the edges, using fake blood, and dirt. They used tools such as glue, scissors, and professional tools while also using some unconventional tools including dry shampoo to create a dusty look and tweezers to shred the clothing.
After the students presented their designs, they listened to an expert panel of Costume Designers who have designed for shows such as Desperate House Wives, Once Upon a Time and Hostiles. These designers have worked in the industry for a long period of time and have gathered advice throughout which they gave to the students.
Eduardo Castro, the Costume Designer for Ugly Betty, 2012, and more, told the students that it is key to create dynamic relationships with the actors they will work. This is important as it is a intimate job where the actors need to feel safe and are able to trust you.
Research is one of the most important parts for a Costume Designer in Film & TV as it is where the beginning stages of the characters emerge says Jenny Eagan, the Costume Designer for Cowboy & Aliens, Now You See Me, and more. History books are a key source to use for jobs as many will be in a different time era which they need to depict accurately. Authenticity is everything in costuming, it should always be believable. That is the advice from Costume Designer, Catherine Adair, who has worked on jobs such as I Know What You Did Last Summer, Desperate House Wives, and The District.
The Advanced Study Program of Film & TV Costume Design provides students with a comprehensive view of the field with its own distinct tradition and creative challenges. It offers a chance for students to explore the qualities that make film and television an exceptional choice for a designer. If you are dreaming about working as a Costume Designer, learn more about the program here.
