To Kill a King are playing in St Ives on Friday and then Ben Howard on Saturday, and I'm working Friday evening and all day Saturday which really sucks, I'm gunna have a look at times and see if I can make it for TKAK, hopefully! but I think i've managed to convince a friend to come with me to see Fighting Fiction on the 30th :D

REVIEW - FIGHTING FICTION "THE LONG AND SHORT OF IT"

The difficult second album. Is that still a thing? Fighting Fiction's self titled debut album only came out last year and already they return with a new full length in the form of “The Long And Short Of It.” Where last years record was a band who were perhaps still trying to find their feet genre wise, mixing punk, folk rock and ska together to create a perfectly great set of songs, but first releases are often a result of songs you've been playing as a band for a long time while you're still trying to sound like the band you want to be – this means you have a bunch of awesome songs you love playing but might not sound the most cohesive when put together on record.

So, after a year and a half away, have Fighting Fiction now found their feet? Yes. Very much so!

The album opens with “Service Station Blues” and straight away we know what kind of album we're going to get. And it's good. The music is lively punk rock in a Menzingers way, and the lyrics deal with personal experience mixed with relatable story telling. Frontman, Jake has enough grit in his voice to make us feel the passion in the words he's telling us, and though this is a far from polished album, the melodies and harmonies really shine through. This is what distinguishes Fighting Fiction from a lot of other bands who try their own take on the gruffer side of punk rock. Great songs with big choruses make a big difference.

A couple of songs on the record are more akin to the folk rock sound of their Xtra Mile label mate Frank Turner, but overall the band have written a fantastic straight up melodic punk rock record. Stand out tracks include “The Getaway,” “Smiling Through Gritted Teeth” and “The Long And The Short Of It,” but to be fair there isn't a duff song on here and the 11 tracks fly by resulting in many a repeat listen.

Difficult second album? No. The DIY punk rockers from Brighton have returned even stronger with a new set of songs to match. This is an essential listen.

The Albums Round Up 15 September 2013

It’s Sunday and that means it’s time for another Albums Round Up. There’s plenty of new releases out in the coming week to delight your eardrums so let’s get on with it.

Album of the Week

My Album of the Week is from Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin who returns with Fly by Wire. Opener ‘Harrison Ford’ has portentous but sweet piano chords in the intro which are joined by faux strings and somewhat innocuous smacky electronic beats to create a mid-tempo ballad whose vocal is a warm echo complemented by subtle harmonies. The closing title track pits organ against sweet picked guitar strings and kit percussion. Here the vocal is more accessible – a sweetly-toned tender voice.  In the middle the album shines. ‘Loretta’ has tambourines and one of the most upbeat guitar lines I’ve heard in a while. Its tale of fear and yearning is as cute as a basket of kittens. The album is a winner for this off-kilter love song. ‘Nightwater Girlfriend’ dirties up the guitars with a bit of feedback and fuzz although the vocals remain sweet. ‘Bright Leaves’ is another fragile track of beauty: acoustic strings and a low-toned vocal sit beside a pretty piano line. Fly By Wire is a delightful album , full of charm. It’s warm, innocent and completely endearing. Highly recommended.

  Wildcard of the Week

My Wildcard of the Week is from The Lost Cavalry who gives Three Cheers for the Undertaker. Packed with pleasant melodies each track has an approach that gradually builds towards an impressive climax from humble beginnings. ‘Secret Steps’ opens up the album with pleasantly ambling acoustic guitar and deep, warm vocals. Over the course of its 3 minutes kit percussion, glockenspiel, bowed strings and more are added to create a rousing number. ‘Stars Are Ripe’ has a bit of mono crackle to give it a vintage edge whilst tambourine, glock and melodica create a pretty, sentimental feel. ‘Snow City Radio’ has the most gutsy opening on the album, with percussive instruments creating a steady beat for the enchanting melody. Closer ‘Mono’ has a lilting quality to the vocal melody, with gentle plucked strings rippling underneath. Three Cheers for the Undertaker is a pleasant indie folk album with delightful melodies and richly layered arrangements. Recommended.

  Sky Larkin gives us Motto this week. The title track opens the record with some resonant guitar chords, buzzing out with a muted threat whilst crisp cymbal taps punctuate the building tension. Hearty guitar lines and a steady rock rhythm propel the track forward into a formidable opening to the album. ‘Newsworthy’ pits the sharp vocals against some pretty picked guitar figures and driving rhythms. ‘Bravo Dodo’ has an accelerating opening and impressive cymbal splashes, here the arrangement presides above the lyrics as the vocal line is merely a component part of the overall wash. Nevertheless, a breakdown allows guitar and vocals to emerge with clarity in the bridge. ‘Frozen Summer’ is a lengthy journey of ebb and flow, with fine riffs and sweet vocals. ‘Loom’, about loss, has uplifting jangly guitars and the guitars chime sweetly on ‘Treasury’, a song about the importance of memory. Motto is a heartfelt collection of indie rock songs. Well worth a listen.

  Girls in Hawaii climb Everest on the band’s latest release. ‘The Spring’ is a gentle, slow-burning piano and strings ballad. It’s a quiet and intimate track of great calm. ‘We Are the Living’ has sweeping synths that lift the mood and a fine percussive line of punchy snares. The vocal is still reserved, with a little echo, and it’s an interesting tactic to pit the vast synth pop arrangement against such a fragile delivery. ‘Changes Will Be Lost’ strips thing back again, with electronic beats and low level keyboards to back the minor key downbeat vocal. ‘Here I Belong’ has a lengthy spoken introduction before the piano ballad kicks in. The effect is to create a rather sentimental and melodramatic track that sits rather strangely with the rest of the collection. ‘Mallory’s Height’ is wonky folk – a song about memories and mountain tops arranged for layers of vocal and acoustic guitar until a gentle wob of sampled vocals changes the palette to folktronica. Everest is a pleasant and varied amble. Worth a listen.

  Crystal Stilts returns with Nature Noir this week. And the band has turned a corner with its sound. The rambunctious wonky rock of In Love with Oblivion has been replaced with a calmer focus. Opener ‘Spirit in Front of Me’ rustles into life with a few jangles of guitar and heavy snare hits. The fuzz of guitars and vocals creates a hazy warmth. ‘Future Folklore’ has a skittish energy in its guitar ambulations, peppy drums and insistent keys.  The title track has bendy guitars and a vocal cleaned up of fuzz. It’s a fresh sound with some fine guitar picking and rich organ texture. ‘Darken the Door’ is almost surfy in the immediacy of its guitar riff, yet the doomy vocal works as a satisfying counterpoint. A weird change of pace – temporarily to waltz time – is a fresh punctuation between verses. There’s plenty of experiment on Nature Noir, as the band pursues new directions. It makes for an intriguing listen.

  The Bloody Beetroots releases HIDE tomorrow. The Italian act opens up this second long player with the buzz of bees on ‘Spank’ before Tai and Bart B More also contribute to this pulsing electro fizz of a track. Tommy Lee features on ‘Raw’, which builds from a shimmer of cymbals to build with heavy guitar riffs into a stadium rock meets dance number. Paul McCartney and Youth pop up on ‘Out of Sight’, with its electro-rock drive. ‘Glow in the Dark’ with Sam Sparro begins with a rainstorm before Sparro’s moody “whoahs” and an insistent keyboard rhythm ushers in a dance ballad. HIDE sees The Bloody Beetroots collaborating with a huge array of performers, always bringing a European dance sheen that holds together every cameo with plenty of gloss.

  Fighting Fiction is back with The Long & Short of It. The Brighton band mix things up on this release, with an acoustic narrative ‘Rebel Without a Cause’ featuring in the middle of the collection, carving a very different sonic path to the full-on guitars and percussion of the rest of the album. ‘Smiling Through Gritted Teeth’ has plenty of rock bite. ‘Casey Jones, Union Scab’ is another narrative song, but here adept guitar hooks and impassioned vocals push the punk track forward with aplomb. ‘A Common Enemy’ has singalong appeal with a catchy melody, crisply powerful drums and a big vocal performance that includes the refrain from ‘When the Saints Go Marching In’. The Long & Short of It is a gutsy record, with the band slugging out tracks that reflect on society all within a punk milieu.
