Empires of Athos - The Country of Filador
I figured in honor of starting up this new Roleplay, I’d do a sort of featurette about each country once a day, talking about the nations and what they’re about and some behind the scenes information about them as it were. Up first is the lands of Filador
Filador is the oldest established country of Athos- currently being ruled by its 63rd King of the Dawnmore line.
The king is very new to the throne, having only ascended to the place of King three months ago, when he struck his father down and took the crown for himself. His reasoning was that his father was bringing an age of ruin to the country of Filador with how he was squandering the peoples money - living in luxury while bleeding the poor dry. Nobles and the impoverish alike are watching King Reddrick Dawnmore very closely to see just what kind of ruler he will turn out to be. None however are watching him closer then his older brother Lazarus, who stepped aside for the boy when he saw the extents he was willing to go to. The country is most noted for being the most technologically advanced country in Athos (for perspective they’re just beginning to scratch the surface of Steampunk-era technology). This is out of a dire necessity. Those born in Filador, regardless of being of Filadorian blood or parents from another country- are born magically inert. Deep research is being done into the reasoning behind this but so far it has proven fruitless. Filador has had a long blood feud with the neighboring country of Dralamore. What started this war? No one knows for sure anymore its been so long- but both sides keep finding reason to start conflict with one another and it doesn’t seem like there’s any sign of this fact changing soon. Currently there’s no active war, but both sides are looking for a reason and the ball is in Filador’s court- with the last conflict ending in Dralamore taking control of the Shidale territory. Both Geographically and culturally Filador is divided nearly in half by the Birmoth Mountains. To the East the lands have been utterly tamed and claimed by human hands. Large metropolises and spiraling cities are the cornerstone of Eastern Filador and none are as shining and proud as the Dawnmore Capital. To the West of the mountains, things are much more relaxed. Wide open spaces and small towns dot the environment. People here tend to be more relaxed, more laid back, and more interested in peddling their wares of homemade goods then conflict and steel. ~-~-~- Filador was one of the last countries I developed when I was coming up with the world of Athos (a little ironic given it’s notoriety for being the oldest I suppose lol) but I knew exactly what I wanted to do with it. I wanted a place where technology was valued over magic but in a world where magic was so powerful I had to decide why that became a fact. It is no secret to those that helped me develop Athos that alot of my inspiration came from games like Final Fantasy and its common conflict of magic vs mech was a huge inspiration for Filador. In early drafts magic was simply outlawed and that was that, but that still didn’t help with balancing - if a nation was far more advanced then everyone else as well as having acess to magic what would stop them from ruling absolutely? So in the end I decided to take the Garlamald approach and just have it that magic was completely off the table there.
