I made a thing tonight. It is called a "file guide". It should be made from hardened steel so that you can fasten a knife tang or other part in it and run a file right up against it in order to make symmetric and/or square lines and so forth. People even use them to ride up against the platen of belt or disk grinders to get a consistent line at the end of the bevel on both sides. If I want to do that I can get some 1/4" carbide tool bits and glue them on. For now, they are going to be used to align bolsters on folding knives, so regular old mild steel should suffice. It was also an interesting test for my 4x36 platen modification. Watch for that post soon :) Anyone else use one of these tools? Make your own? I wish I had some more aggressive belts for the 4x36 now. All I have are 80. I glued a seriously hard ceramic tile onto the platen. I don't know much about the tile, I just picked up one according to size at the ReStore for $0.55. I tried scoring and snapping it with an angle grinder, and I got it to score, somewhat, but did more melting of the grinder disk. Whatever it is made of will even spark sometimes. I used the belt to round over the fore and aft ends to take some stress off of the belt. Then I used it excessively to make my #fileguide in my previous post. It needs a sturdy table, and that will be the next project. Maybe even a little welding :) I only wish I had some other belts. The 80's do great on wood. And eventually they do some stuff to metal. However, I would love to see how well this would work with a zirconia or ceramic 36 or 40 for removing some metal. I hate to invest much more in this machine since I am just waiting for the big belt grinder to come, then I put this one to bed, or for sale. Unless I can figure a way to turn it I to a surface grinder. :) Anyone else like using these 4x36 sanders?
