Park and Bike

Researching Repsol's  ‘station committed to the future’, it stated their plan of bicycle parking with a changing room for cyclists, but this addition to the station is just to promote environmental-friendly mode of transportation by allowing people with bikes to park and come inside the station to refuel on food or change clothes/ cleanup. What if you could park your cars on the lot and ride off in bikes? This would be brilliant because in the future we probably won't be using cars as often due to environmental reasons, so why not promote environmental- friendly mode of transportation by providing bicycles for one's daily commute. Okay so sure drop off you car and ride off in a bike, but how easy is that really? With a size of an average gas station lot, I'm sure not many cars would be able to be parked so now the idea is to come up different methods of parking a large number of cars.

Norman Foster's Canopy Modular System (REPSOL)

Norman Foster's modular canopy system replaces the traditional protection of the area where people refuel their cars. These canopies range in height from the red canopy being the tallest at 8m and the rest are slightly shorter depending on its specific Repsol site location. The base is a series of vertical elements in a pergola topped pyramidal structure upside down, and a square, which are distributed at different heights covering the entire area of the station. Each modern square-based module is 11.20 x 11.20 meters. These structural steel canopies are lined with aluminum panels with polyethylene soul attached to the structure, which allows a high aesthetic finish highlighted by the different heights of the structures. About 200 Repsol station of Spain have been designed this way since 1997. This canopy system creates a warm and inviting environment and definitely is a marquee itself for advertisement of Repsol because of the bright colors the canopies are made of.

Repsol of the Future

Future Repsol Station projected for future. The project has aimed for its environmental impact to be minimal. Recycled materials, such as the paper from 7,000 newspapers have been used for its walls or 64 kilos of sheep’s wool as insulation. Other materials have been re-used, such as the canopies designed by the architect Norman Foster, which come from another service station.   

This ‘station committed to the future’ also incorporates innovations in terms of sustainable mobility: a charging post for electric vehicles and a B20 biodiesel pump. Another example of these new times is its bicycle parking area with a changing room for cyclists. Energy efficiency has been another of its priorities and, among its advances, 100% of the service station lighting uses LED technology, which will give an electricity consumption saving of 80%.
