The Internship Red Carpet Premiere in Melbourne
Casual elegance reigned supreme at the Australian red carpet premiere for The Internship at Melbourne’s Village Crown Cinemas in Southbank this week. The film’s star, Vince Vaughn was originally planned to join local celebs for the event, but cancelled his Australian visit in favour of family commitments.
Many local celebrities in attendance for the new comedy’s only Australian premiere event chose to grace the red carpet in cool, understated fashions befitting of Melbourne’s wintry weather. For the boys, such as Melbourne Storm star, Justin O’Neill and Collingwood footballer, Travis Cloke, who brought along his retired footballer father, David, jeans, beanies and cosy knitwear were the outfits of choice. The ladies dressed a little more vibrantly with lots of fabulous floral prints, teamed with sheer black tops or black blazers, as well as warm fur vests.
Famous WAG, Alex Fevola attended the event with her design partner, Penny Cripps with whom she designs fashionable leather wear for Cray The Label. Fevola chatted happily with the crowd, sporting one of her own designs, a black leather jacket with a draw-cord cinching in at the waist, three quarter sleeves and a high collar.

Others in attendance included Neighbours star, Saskia Hampele, actress and presenter, Chantelle Raleigh, 3AW Drive host, Tom Elliott, Mondo Rock frontman Ross Wilson, Jennifer Hansen who came along with her daughter, Veronica, and star of Winners and Losers, Damien Bodie.

For many guests, the pairing of comedy duo and real life friends, Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson, eight years since their smash hit Wedding Crashers, was what they were most excited to see in The Internship. It certainly seems as though the two reuniting on set has been a long time coming, because the fun that Vaughn and Wilson have throughout the film is palpable and infectious.
Vaughn and Wilson play Billy McMahon and Nick Campbell, respectively, two expert salesman partners who come from an analog age and haven’t quite caught on to the fact that the future of business is online, or “on the line” as Billy mistakenly (and repeatedly) calls it. The company they work for folds and they are left back at square one, unemployed and possessing few skills, despite an array of important life experience.
Going out on a limb, the two men apply for internship positions with search engine giant, Google, and after an awkward but enthusiastic ‘Google hang out’ interview conducted via web cam, which the guys undertake from a children’s library, they are hired. Their challenge is to prove themselves in a competition against hundreds of other hopeful interns who are a generation younger and very much more technologically savvy than Billy and Nick.
Over an entire summer, the interns must take on challenges such as app designing, manning the Google helpline and competing in matches of not-so-friendly Quidditch, all conducted on the workplace playground that is the Google campus in California. The ‘Googleplex’ campus is practically a star cast member in its own right, featuring colourful campus bicycles, driver-less cars, sleeping pods, free food, and a slide to transport its staff from one floor to another as some of the seemingly endless perks for the lucky staff at Google.
The Internship is a rollicking fun ride with a lot of heart and soul to it, and some of the best motivational speeches employing metaphors from the film Flashdance ever uttered by anyone. It also celebrates the underdog and proves that the lost art of face to face communication is still just as important as ever in today’s world, which is more often than not viewed through computer and mobile phone screens. Almost like a modern take on Revenge of the Nerds,The Internship is a self aware geek film, with references to films like X-Men and Harry Potter as well as a subtle throwaway reference to the popular HBO series, Game of Thrones.
Also starring John Goodman, Australian beauty Rose Byrne, a very funny Aasif Mandvi and with a hilarious, obligatory cameo from Will Ferrell, The Internship hits Australian cinemas for general release from Thursday, June 13th.
