MobileMovieMaking Tip #62. TRY VERTICAL FILMMAKING IN A HEAD-AND-SHOULDER VIDEO. Our bias is to shoot wide, that is, in the horizontal or landscape orientation. This is how almost every feature film and TV show is shot. YouTube and other popular video hosting sites are designed to exhibit horizontally shot video. If you post vertical video on such platforms, you’ll usually see vertical black bars filling up the space to the left and right of your movie. That said, many talented moviemakers are experimenting with vertical video. The frame here is from “A Beauty Salon with a Difference,” a two-minute news feature by Irish mobile journalist @PhilipBromwell. In Bromwell’s report, most of the clips are mid-shots emphasizing the subjects’ heads and shoulders. Bromwell commented that this was his first attempt at vertical video storytelling. The key is to be intentional.
