It’s a reality we all face in the field—systems that run smoothly on paper but falter under pressure. Filtration, despite being one of the most mature segments in industrial processing, is still full of surprises. And sometimes, even a minor oversight can spiral into a major operational bottleneck.

From clogged housings that should’ve been replaced months ago to membrane failures caused by water chemistry no one checked. These issues aren’t new, but the way we respond to them can mean the difference between a productive day and a full system shutdown.
Let’s walk through some of the most common filtration challenges and how to troubleshoot them effectively.
1. Sudden Drop in Flow Rate
This is perhaps the most obvious red flag. One day the system’s running fine, and the next, everything slows down.
Possible causes:
Fouling of the filter media due to particulate overload
Bacterial or organic biofilm buildup
Incorrect filter pore size for the application
Undersized system for actual flow requirements
Solution: Start with a visual inspection (if safe). Is pressure differential across the filter higher than expected? If so, the element may be clogged. Cleaning might help in some cases, but replacement is often faster and more cost-effective.
In one food processing plant we worked with in Gujarat, a 20-micron filter was being used where a 5-micron was needed. The larger pore size allowed fine solids to keep slipping through and fouling downstream membranes. A simple swap eliminated the recurring flow issue.
2. Filter Media Rupture or Deformation
A ruptured filter doesn’t just compromise product quality—it can send contaminants downstream, damaging expensive equipment or invalidating batch integrity.
Likely culprits:
Excessive differential pressure
Chemical incompatibility with the filter material
Repeated use beyond rated life cycle
Thermal shock or poor housing design
Solution: Always verify the material of construction (MOC) against the process fluid. PTFE, PVDF, stainless steel, polypropylene—each has its strengths and limitations. And if pressure surges are an issue, consider installing dampeners or relief valves.
3. Frequent Filter Changeouts
No one likes changing filters every few hours. It’s labor-intensive, waste-generating, and expensive over time.
Potential reasons:
Poor pre-filtration or lack of staged filtration
High contaminant load not considered in design
Incorrect media choice (e.g., depth filter instead of surface filter)
Solution: We often recommend a multi-stage filtration approach. Start with a bag or depth filter to remove bulk contaminants, then move to finer elements. One pharma company reduced filter changeouts from daily to once a week just by introducing a 10-micron depth cartridge upstream of their 0.2-micron final filter.
4. Unusual Odors, Color, or Taste
This is common in food, beverage, and pharmaceutical industries. If you notice off-spec characteristics post-filtration, act fast.
Check for:
Extractables or leachables from new filter media
Media degradation due to pH or chemical exposure
Microbial breakthrough due to ineffective sterilization
Solution: Ensure filters used are certified for the application—especially when filtering consumables or injectables. Conduct regular integrity tests on sterile filters, and never exceed temperature or pressure ratings during CIP (clean-in-place) procedures.
5. Inconsistent Filtrate Quality
Sometimes everything appears okay—flow rate is fine, filters look clean—but final product specs fluctuate.
What’s happening?
Bypass leakage due to improper filter installation
Gasket or seal failure
Incorrect housing for the flow dynamics
Solution: Inspect the housing. Is the filter seated properly? Is the gasket material compatible and intact? A small misalignment or damaged O-ring can lead to major variability. One simple rule we follow: always torque housings to manufacturer specs—no more, no less.

Google, by way of Amit Singhal, Google Fellow, in a post on the Offical Google Blog about a change to Google’s search algorithm promoting “fresher” content. While it’s true that more recently updated web pages (say, news, references, or geography) are generally more useful than outdated ones, I'm not convinced that such a prioritization of newer content is merited. And I am particularly concerned that “breaking” content is becoming increasingly preferred to better content.
