Final Display
With the final degree show being 2 months away I have been considering different ways of displaying my work, my final final works will consist of two prints and a series of models.
Above are two Ideas for my final method of display which I have tested using solid works to give me a better idea of how the final plinth will look and its suitability when considering my final pieces.
What my plinths should do in-order to be successful :
* Be suitable for the display of my models and plinths in terms of material, theme and use dimensions that also suit the work.
* Suit the needs of the public in terms of height and scale and allow for the public to interact with the display.
*Integrate the theme of the project effectively, which include medical science and the future, must give the impression of a future exhibit which has been organised by a future body enhancement company.
The first thing I did when thinking about how to display my work was to look at how others have displayed their work which has a similar theme to my own to give me some ideas to work with.
Influence 1 :
The radical prosthetic project held in new York seen in the picture above, this exhibition uses similar themes to that of my project.

I have considered the for mentioned exhibit held in new york in relation to my display because I like the modern aesthetic of the exhibition which uses a lowered plinth with rounded edges as the focal point in the centre of the room and is the main focal point of the design with the mannequin display.
I think the most successful elements of this display is the white backdrop which is very calming allowing the user to think independently about the design as the white colour exists as a void that doesn’t distract the audience from the pieces being displayed it also works well against the panelled floor which will also be present in my display considering my work is displayed in an old Victorian piece of architecture.
The size of the plinth that the works are being displayed upon works well also as it allows the audience to view the models from all angles which is quite important when considering three dimensional works, if you can only see some portions it reduces the impact that the work has on the user, by seeing it from all angles you can see the work and its finite detail.
Influence 2 :
I have also looked at the future depictions of the medical practice to see what colours they employ, Here is an example above which uses again lots of white and light colours which are very reminiscent of the colours used in medical facilities today.
influence 3 :
With the main form of display within the exhibition being plinths I have also decided to use a plinth to display my work.
To help me think about the design of plinths I have looked at modern plinth designs I found the one above worked well because it strayed away from the cube shape that plinths normally employ.
With Plinths in mind I then started to draw different plinth ideas that would be suitable for the display of my work, I also thought about some of the successful elements that the existing methods of display have used.
Below is my final idea for my plinth in its drawing form which has was chosen form several different drawings which I created.
As you can see on the drawing I have identified how this plinth would operate when think about the display of my work.
The top half of the plinth consists of four layers, three back panels and a raised box where my models would sit, the middle panel will also have a biotech logo in the centre.
The back panels as well as each side of the table will display my prints giving the user adequate amount of space to view the plinths.
The structure would be 4 ft high and 6ft wide, these dimensions will allow for adequate space when displaying my work and will allow the work to be seen from multiple angles.
What I like most about the design that I have created is that it is a unique shape unlike any other plinth that I have seen it was important to create something that was new and conveyed a modern design aesthetic.
Because my plinth design was a ambiguous shape I found it was quite hard to fully appreciate it through a pen drawing therefore I took the design idea one step forward and created a digital model of my plinth allowing me to view the design in a three dimensional form.
Solid works drawings
The solidworks software has allowed me to view the plinths form as a mechanical drawing which can then be used within the making of the plinth as it gives me a better idea of how the plinth is constructed.
I have also looked at colour using Solidworks and have gone for a grey tone which is still uses a light colour palette similar to that used in the other methods of display whilst also representing industry to reference the industrial and technologically advanced society that will exist in the future.
After further discussions with my tutors they have asked me to consider an open plinth design to match with the overall exhibition which as a collective have used open top plinths, after which I tested another iteration of the plinth which was a more open design.
Developed plinth ideas:
Above is an image of the final plinth design which has been developed to be more open in comparison to the last iteration and I think that it is more successful because it gives the models more space to breath and is less bulky in comparison to its predecessor.
Final after deciding that the perfect colour for the plinth was grey I decided to look at a few different shades of grey using some colour charts to find the right shade.
Here is a colour chart that I have used when choosing the colour of my plinth I chose a shade that was very similar the 25 box, the colour I chose was timeless grey because I feel that it best resembles the prominence of industry in the future and within my work without overpowering my models which will likely be white.
I will use the final plinth ideas and colour theory shown above as a reference to look back upon when constructing my plinth alongside the measurements and information which I have noted down in the sketches.
