I watched Godzilla: Final Wars (2004). This movie is the apex of what a B-movie can be if it tries its best. There are no moments of significant emotional impact in this. There are really no characters who are well-humanized or given moments that tug on your heartstrings. This is a movie that operates almost nonsensically on the Rule of Cool. 9/10, A-

I had an absolute blast with this movie. It's like the pinnacle of a 'pure' kaiju movie mixed in with, like, the Matrix, Garo and Dark Angel.

There's a new subspecies of humanity, mutants, they're part of the M Organization which fights kaiju, they dress like the SS for some reason.

-They actually defeat a kaiju in this movie. Like, they straight up nearly kill Ebirah with handheld guns in this. There are five mutants who engage him in this sick fight in a petrochemical factory, and they just fucking win. There's no moment during the M Organization vs Ebirah fight where I was like 'ok this is dumb.' I was shocked how much I vibed with it.

-I don't think describing the plot of this movie is really worth it - because it is just nonstop Cool Moments. Like, yes, the Xiliens are back and are actually fun and charismatic. Do they have depth? No, nothing in this movie does. They're To Serve Man assholes who think humans are cattle, their leader is this guy and they are hamming it the fuck up, like every single actor in this movie, human or monster.

There's a surprising amount of Matrix influence in this movie - virtually all of the fights between human/oid characters in this reminded of scenes from the Matrix - they even have a 'telekinetically stopping projectiles while zooming in on protagonist' scene.

-Before the Xiliens showed up, humanity was on the verge of reigning supreme over kaiju, I noticed. Like, they have multiple copies of the Atragon around the world, Godzilla was sealed away until they released him, the movie opens up with them killing Manda.

If the Xiliens hadn't shown up, hit humanity with an Independence Day style invasion and all of the kaiju at once, they probably would have killed all the kaiju within 20 years. This actually might be the most logical Godzilla setting yet in that regard. Yeah, if you have all this superscience, eventually you're just gonna win - provided a genre-typical escalation doesn't occur.

-The American character in this movie, Gordon, is incredible. Cigar-chomping badass who almost exclusively speaks in English, like the white actors from the Showa era movies who were just dubbed over, but in this, he just speaks English to the Japanese characters and they speak Japanese back, like he's Lassie. Ridiculous. Excellent.

This clip is basically the spirit of the entire movie, if you see that and go 'fucking awesome' you'll love this movie. If you see that and go 'that looks stupid', you won't like this movie.

Sorry, Japan, our home video tagline understood your movie better than you did lmfao. This is not a somber farewell to Godzilla like that one implies. This one is 'bitching rock music blares during nonstop scenes of mindless violence.'

This movie is not Good, but it is the apex of Cool. That's the most substantial caveat I have for this movie. I had an absolute blast with it. 9/10 is the highest this movie could hope to achieve with the flaws it's working under, but I'm glad I watched it. Just King Kong 2005 left in this watchthrough.
