There is something about the annoying fall-almost winter weather. The way the day always got suddenly so gloomy and gray, or how the rain would always come unannounced and ruin your plans when going out.
Well, it was not all that bad. It could never be when Kai was around and making you see things from another perspective. The sun always shines differently in autumn, and the leaves are the prettiest when they are all orange; he made you notice that. And, yes, sometimes rain could ruin a few things, but it was also an excuse to stay in and make a movie marathon.
Your relationship with Kai goes way back. From playing with him and his sisters at the park, to going to college together and sharing the oh-so-sweet adult life. Every birthday party, every family dinner was better because of him. Such a great friendship that both families started placing bets on how long it would take for the two of you to get together.
Eventually, your friends started, not so subtly, doing it too.
“Why do you keep dancing around each other? It’s getting annoying.” Soobin made this small remark one day when you visited their dorm for game night. All of this attitude just because Huening Kai abandoned him to team up with you? What a loser.
Or the time Beomgyu pretended to gag just because Kai had offered you his jacket one night the group went out for dinner.
But there was a time your heart indeed did a little stupid jump because of him.
“Are you ok? Did something happen?”
Your body jumped with the sound of the door, abruptly opening, only to meet Kai’s worried eyes. His voice cut sharply through the small space of your dorm, and his tone was actually making you a little nervous because, yeah, what indeed had happened?
It was not unusual to have him over unannounced. In fact, it was happening so often that your friends thought something was going on between the two of you. Crazy, right? Can’t best friends demonstrate physical affection for each other?
“I’m not sure…” You slurred, voice thick with sleep. “You tell me, you’re the one acting like the world is about to end.”
Kai blinked at you by the doorway like you had said something from another planet. He kicked out his worn-out Converse and quickly made his way to the spot next to you on the cushions.
“Yeonjun hyung told me you fell during lunch and had a swollen ankle. I tried calling, but you didn't pick up, so I showed up.”
It was almost like Kai was embarrassed about letting you know that. Why else would his cheeks be dusted with a faint baby pink and his neck so hot he had to fan himself under the excuse of being almost summer?
You stared at him a second too long. It was not out of this world having him like this, worried and trying to help. But the way he said it? It was like it was the most obvious answer ever. Of course he would be there. It’s Kai we are talking about.
“Oh.” You said, dumbfounded. "Well, I just tripped. There’s no need to worry. See?” You threw your leg up on his lap to make a point. Kai didn't buy it. He never did. Being best friends for so long had its pros and cons.
“It hurts, doesn't it?” his brows quirked up, frowning a little. God, was he cute.
"Just a little when I walk. The nurse said I'm fine, so stop worrying, Hueningie.”
But that’s just how things were. Huening Kai was a gentleman (perks of being the middle child, raised by his sisters) and would never treat you or any other girl differently. So what’s the point of all of those small comments your friends were making?
“C’mon, you promised we would have dinner,” he whined on your bed one afternoon.
“Yeah, but I never promised it would be today, Hueningie.” You mumbled while chewing the top of your pen. “I have this international political economy test on Monday and I’m pretty sure I’m doomed, Kai.”
“Are you insane? It’s Friday night, and you’re saying no to food. Food that I’m willing to pay!” He gasped, walking up to your desk and yanking you up. “Please?” There it was, his puppy face and pouty lips making you feel guilty.
To be honest, Huening Kai could take you anywhere. He was a nice company, and being with him was almost like healing wounds. Things didn’t have to change.
“So,” he nudged you, “what do you say? I promise I’ll help you study.”
Your tongue clicked. He was driving a hard bargain; Kai was pretty smart, and he was offering to pay…
“Fine,” you said. “Bring me back by nine; I get cranky when I’m sleepy.”
“Believe me, I know.” Huening Kai scoffed, taking hold of your shoulders and rushing out of the door of your small apartment.
Life was funny, too funny. Apparently, when things were going relatively fine, the universe decided to conspire against you.
It was mid-autumn, but the wind blowing against your face was as cold as ice. Winter must be right around the corner. Cold enough to make your cheeks go pink and your lips get chapped. The sky also threatened rain, but for now, it held itself together.
Yeah, it was cold. And Kai had noticed it by the way you tried to protect your stomach with your arms, or how you were sniffling ever since you had left the house. He always noticed everything.
Almost like an instinct, he placed his jacket over your shoulders, of course. But why did he also embrace you with his arms?
“Hey,” your stiff body gave it away, “I got you. It’s okay.”
God, his voice was awfully soft, sticky sweet. Always with you.
“Thanks.” Different from his, your voice was small, too quiet and off.
But you didn’t have time for that. Not when little droplets of water were falling and painting the grey sidewalk. Thankfully, the small restaurant was just around the corner, giving you two enough time to get there safe and sound.
By the time you got there, the window was covered. It was cozy, it was a fact. Soft music was playing in the background, and the place was not crowded. Perfect.
You slid into a booth beside Kai, grateful for the warmth that immediately wrapped around you. The restaurant smelled faintly of broth and spices, something comforting that made the cold outside feel very far away.
“You know,” you grabbed the menu, eyes scanning over the options, “since it’s raining, I thought that maybe we could get beef udon? It’s a nice food.”
“Nice food,” he snorted. “Who describes food like this?”
“I do. What’s wrong with the way I talk?
A laugh this time. His signature one.
You shot him a look from across the menu, face warm with the looks people were giving you.
“Shut up, Hyuka! People are looking.” You kicked him under the table.
“Ow!”
“You’re almost twenty-four; please grow up.”
“You say this like it’s a bad thing, but you and I have been friends for, what? Twenty years?”
“Ok, wow. Not that much…it’s 16 years,” you grumbled. But he did have a point; that was long enough.
The waiter arrived before he could come up with a comeback, and he ordered for both of you. Always, like your friends’ partners doing the same for them.
Bickering dissolved into a comfortable conversation, like it always did. The kind that came naturally after years of knowing someone.
Outside, rain tapped softly against the windows, turning the city into a blur. Except inside was warm; being with Kai was warm. But that’s only natural when you are with someone you love. And you loved all of your friends; you felt the same way when you were hanging out with Yunjin the other day and didn’t want to go back home, and when Yeonjun walked you to your place because it was late and wanted to make sure you’d be safe.
Moments like this made it easy to forget why everyone kept teasing you.
Or maybe they made it impossible to forget.
“Are you even listening to me?” Kai touched your arm, bringing you back to reality.
“No. Sorry. I’m worried about the test.”
You glanced at him with a small smile, one that he copied and you were familiar with.
“I said that Hiyyih and Lea asked me when you would visit them again.” His voice was low, calm. Kai never made you feel down for not listening sometimes.
“Whenever you can drive me.” You teased. “They live too far to take public transport, and I don’t exactly have a license.”
“You know, maybe you should get one. It would save me a lot of money on gas.”
“It would. I would stop bothering you with that.”
“You don’t bother me; I like having you around.” His cheeks were dusted with a faint pink blush at his own comment.
“You love me.”
“Yeah.” This time, his smile showed his gums, as a little kid opening presents on Christmas morning.
Yeah.
“You know,” you spoke up, breaking the awkward mood (the one that was happening only in your head), “I like your sisters. They have your face and all. Well, you have Lea’s face; she’s the oldest.”
“Why are you insulting me?” And this wasn’t supposed to make you laugh, but it did. Kai had an amused-offended smile on his face, making your cheeks grow red at how insanely good he looked with that stupid floppy hair and black sweater.
“There it is…” He cooed it like it was something familiar. Like he knew it would happen before it even did. “I’ve been trying to make you laugh the whole night.”
Silence settled between you. Not uncomfortable, but there was something.
It was oddly familiar in a way you couldn’t explain.
Outside, the rain pressed harder against the glass.
Inside, the air felt warmer than it should’ve, and you looked down at your hands.
“Thanks for taking me out of the bedroom tonight. I was going a little insane.” You admitted.
Kai leaned back slightly, one hand wrapped around his cup and the other sneaking behind your shoulder.
“You do that when you're stressed,” he said again, softer this time. “Disappear a little. But it’s ok, as long as you allow me to stay close, I’ll help you.”
You tried to ignore the way your heart reacted to that stupidly simple sentence. Instead, you reached for your chopsticks again like nothing had happened.
By the time you finished eating, the rain hadn’t stopped.
If anything, it had gotten worse.
Kai stood first, sliding out of the booth and stretching his shoulders like the weather was just a tiny detail of the night.
The check arrived before you even realized time had passed.
Kai reached for it automatically, like always. Somehow, this time it made you embarrassed.
“Kai, we can share–”
“I got it. I asked you out, I pay.”
“You always pay.” You huffed, adjusting your purse on your shoulder.
He was having none of that. Huening Kai slid in his card without you noticing, ending any further bickering.
“Your girlfriend is feisty.” The woman at the cashier winked and waved him goodbye.
What’s the point of correcting? She wouldn’t believe him anyway.
Opening the door for you, Kai winced. The water pouring was nothing less than aggressive.
“The skies are mad.” You mumbled, glancing up and taking a not-so-subtle look at his face. Sharp nose and jaw, as if someone had sculpted it.
Kai glanced up at the sky.
“Yeah.” A beat. Then he looked at you instead. “Do you think we can walk back?”
“I think we’ll both wake up with a cold by morning.”
You both stared at the rain as it had personally betrayed you.
“But we are not made of sugar, and there’s a reason why medicine exists,” you continued.
Kai shifted closer to the curb, automatically positioning himself between you and the street, already stepping into the rain without thinking about it. Like a habit. Like muscle memory.
“Okay,” he said finally. “We walk.” And he held out his hand for you to take. It was not a question or an invitation; he was just waiting. Waiting for you with a lingering look in his eyes.
You hesitated for half a second longer than you meant to.
Then you took his hand. The moment your fingers met his, warmth spread through you in a way that had nothing to do with the weather.
Kai didn’t say anything, just tightened his grip slightly and pulled you forward into the rain.
Cold hit your face instantly, making you hiss and cling tighter to his sweater.
“Start walking, Huening. Walk!”
“You’re so bossy.”
But you didn’t really pay attention to what he was saying, because despite the comment, he was smiling and his stupid hair was clinging to his face and the back of his neck, holding you so easily like you were meant to be there.
“I–”
You stumbled slightly on the wet pavement, too distracted by looking at him.
Before your body could meet the ground, Kai caught you without even looking, stumbling a little himself.
“You okay?” he asked, suddenly closer.
“Yeah,” you said too fast. “It’s just slippery.”
“Mhm. Careful,” he said, but there was no real scolding in it. Just attention. Always attention.
But he didn’t let go. Didn’t even loosen his hold.
“I’m okay,” you repeated, softer this time.
Kai nodded once but didn’t move away right away.
The streetlight above flickered, and the rain made everything feel suspended, like even the world was holding its breath with you.
“Come on,” he said, voice quieter now. “We’re almost there.”
He moved a little closer to your side. And somehow the cold couldn’t reach you anymore. Not on the streets and not when you two raced to your front door, avoiding the judgmental look the security guard gave you in the lobby.
Kai let out a quiet laugh under his breath. You looked cute, flustered like that.
His body was so, so close to yours while you fumbled with your keys; you could feel his hot breath on your neck, along with some remaining water droplets coming down from his hair.
“Why is her hallway wet?” A very familiar voice cut the silence, making you push Kai away without thinking. “I swear to God, if– Y/n!”
Beomgyu, of course. Behind him, Yeonjun and Taehyun were summoned, holding back a laugh.
Great.
“Fuck, I forgot it was my turn to host game night this month.” You hissed.
Their gaze went from you, soaked, flushed, still half-locked in Kai’s space, to Kai himself, who was also dripping water onto your floor like it was completely normal behavior.
Then Beomgyu slowly blinked.
“…Why,” he said carefully, “are you two wet?”
“Isn’t it obvious?” Taehyun giggled. “They were on a date.”
You were still kind of pressed into Kai’s side. His hand was still near your wrist. Not fully holding you anymore, but not exactly letting go either. Like his body hadn’t gotten the message that the outside world was over.
Kai blinked slowly. “We are not—”
“Save it. We are going home.” Yeonjun added with a smirk. “Soobin is on a date, too. We can do this next week when everyone is here.”
“It was not a date!” You stomped your feet on the tiles like a three-year-old.
“Yeah?” Beomgyu got closer. “You’re red, sweets. Steaming, even. Did our Hueningie give you a kiss?”
Kai made a sound- something between a cough and a laugh- and finally let go of your wrist to shake water out of his hair. The motion sent droplets everywhere.
“That’s it! Shoo! Shoo, you three! You’re banished from my house.”
Something clicked at that moment inside Beomgyu’s stupid head. Of course the universe would conspire against you.
His eyes darted from you to Kai and then back to you again. Your hair was soaked. Kai's sweater was dripping onto the hallway floor. The two of you were standing entirely too close together.
To anyone else, this would only be a little susícious. But not to Beomgyu and his big mouth.
“You two kissed.” It was not a question; he said it with such certainty you wanted to slap his little grin off.
Kai pinched the bridge of his nose immediately.
"Don't."
"You two kissed."
"No, we didn't."
“That explains the sexual tension!”
Kai nearly choked.
You wished the floor would open and swallow you whole.
Beomgyu looked between the two of you again, eyes narrowing.
“Yeonjun, call Soobin.” He said. “We are witnessing two idiots in love and he’s not here to lecture them.”
“Out!” You rushed them down the stairs, ignoring Beomgyu's dramatic cries about “silencing the truth” and Yeonjun's laughter echoing through the stairwell, leaving Kai behind.
“Forgive them.” Taehyun squeezed your shoulder in sympathy. “We’ve been waiting for this moment.”
He walked away, waving goodbye and promising to give your friends a lecture on your behalf.
Behind you, Kai was still standing in the middle of your hallway, rainwater dripping from his sweater onto the floor.
"You should probably head home before you catch pneumonia," you said.
Kai glanced toward the window.
"Probably."
Neither of you moved.
Something strange passed between you.
The realization that neither of you actually wanted the night to end, there, in the darkness of your level.
Outside, rain still drummed against the windows, but it sounded distant now, muffled by the warmth lingering between you.
Kai rubbed the back of his neck.
"So..." he started.
"So..." you echoed. “Stay? It’s too cold outside, and you don’t have the car today.”
Kai's shoulders shook with laughter.
The sound made something inside your chest soften. You liked making him laugh. To be honest, you liked a lot of things about Huening Kai.
Maybe too many things.
And with that came the realization. The real one this time, with your apartment door half opened, soaking wet from the rain.
“Kai?”
His expression softened immediately.
"Yeah?"
You swallowed.
Suddenly, your throat felt dry. The words sat there for a second. Yet, you continued.
“I’m not scared.”
At first, Kai didn’t really understand what you were really talking about. But just like anyone knows that 2+2= 4, he did the math right away.
“Good, because I’m not scared either.” He said like he was so sure of what would come next.
Your breath caught at that, but Kai’s eyes softened, and for once there was no teasing hiding behind them.
Just honesty.
Just him.
“You’re still my best friend.” You declared.
“I know. I never thought otherwise.”
He lifted his hand slowly, stopping just short of your face, waiting- always waiting.
You didn’t step away.
So he didn’t either.
And finally, finally, the space between you disappeared.
Kai tucked a small piece of wet hair behind your ear. You blushed at how warm his hands were, so close to your face. A face he swore he could spend his whole life learning every day.
Your hands clutched the fabric of his T-shirt, and you took a shaky breath. That was his cue.
He kissed you with no hesitation, and you melted into him. Your hands sliding down his chest. You’re kissing Huening Kai, the boy you’ve known for basically your whole life, in front of your doorway.
His hands cling to your face like you are some priceless gem, and your fingers toying with the hair on the back, like it’s silk thread. When you pulled away for a breath of air, Kai was already grinning.
“I love you.” In a way that feels honest.
