#25: Trust

Louvel lifted a glass from the table and brought it to his lips. He drank without much thought, without any worry. He hadn't been the one to put it there. He wasn’t the one that filled it. Time and time again he had gone through the motions, and once in a while he’d find something hiding in his drink. He’d gotten used to Spider slipping in various venoms or simply handing him something to sample for one reason or another. Tea, scotch, a potion. Regardless of what it was, he accepted it. She could have killed him by now if she really wanted to like this, and still he never hesitated to drink. To him, if it came down to that, he’d be too dead to complain in the end.

 Come what may. He trusted her. 

Out of sight, out of mind. Keep to the shadows, watch from afar. He’d gotten used to his role, making sure Spider was able to do the work she needed without too much hassle, too much grief. Seal the deal, get that signature. Anything for that signature. Perhaps not anything, despite how paranoia would try to claw its way back into his mind. It didn’t matter who was on the other side of that table, it got his got his hackles up. The way she spoke to them, the way they looked at her. He’d seen this before, knew what ignoring it could lead to. 

This was different. He would trust her.

A thin white line. A deep inhale. A rush not quite like any other. When the spider is away the wolf will play. It wasn’t the end all be all, but it was enough. A vice. A crutch. Something to kill time. Something to weaken the numbness. The peak of Serendipity’s effects always faded by the time Spider got home, leaving behind a desired afterglow. It was just enough. Enough to smile a little more, laugh a little easier. Enough to feel a little closer to normal again. He wondered if she knew, or if she was bothered by it if she did. He never felt the need to mention it, and was content keeping it that way for now. 

He trusted her. Hopefully she trusted him.

Should she trust him? Should he trust her? This was different, he reminded himself. How different though, really? Would it stay that way? How long until it changed? Louvel could feel it, that phantom itch, that murmur in the back of his mind. Paranoia and trepidation lurked in the peripherals, just out of reach, just buried enough to remain incoherent voices. Nothing real, nothing substantial.  He didn’t know how to feel about it, and all he could work with was memory. Few memories were pleasant when it came to these things. Perhaps he could get answers. Get closure? He didn’t even know anymore. 

He had learned quickly not to trust Soleil. Would this be the same?

“The Sea of Clouds. Dusk.” Louvel had nothing more to offer, nothing more to say. He knew he didn’t need to. “I’ll be there.” Soleil was so quick to answer despite her confusion. They both knew where, they both knew this song and dance. It was nostalgic in the worst kind of way, to tread over old bad habits, but it was a means to an end. It wouldn’t be the same, this wasn’t like all those times before. He wanted none of the same things out of it now. 

It was probably a mistake to trust him.
