I.Confronting the Challenges of Participatory Culture
Review of the Chapter “Enabling Participation“
Author: Henry Jenkis
„This report celebrates a world in which everyone has access to the means of creative expression and the networks supporting artistic distribution. We are moving away from a world in which some produce and many consume media toward one in which everyone has a more active stake in the culture that is produced.“
It is refreshing that Jenkins shows positive effects of media use and consumption, instead of listing the negative outcomes like a shortened attention span and similar problems.
Jenkins states that people who create and circulate their own media are more likely to respect the intellectual property rights of others because they feel a greater stake in the cultural economy.
The new media enables people to learn according to their own terms, pace and interests. I love the playful approach instead oft he „frontal teaching“. If you are able to learn important skills in a friendly and playful environment (in my opinion) you are more likely to remember what you’ve learned and also recall it in stressful situations because your memories are connected to a positive experience.
But there also seems to be a big gap between the playful using of new media and interacting with the real world and real world problems, like politics. A gap we have yet to overcome.
Everything became a lot more accessible and faster. Sometimes I’m afraid to be left behind. I am 26 now, still young of course but I’m worried about being too slow in understanding new trends and customs and to be left behind by the younger generation, the „digital natives“ that probably have a better understanding and faster perception. But that problem is probably also solved through the support of the wide community ;)
I also wonder how individual one really is. I mean, yeah, it offers space to contribute your own ideas but through influences from other people all the time, how original are your ideas at the end of the day?
