Sydney Man Arrested for Defrauding Financial Institutions of $37 Million
Police have arrested a man on charges of defrauding 10 financial institutions of about $37 million. The arrest was second in a week where the accused made fake invoices and ripped off financial institutions.
The man turned himself over to police at Sutherland and was immediately arrested. The charges filed against him include nine counts of fraud and five counts of using deception to acquire money. Ten financial institutions lost $36,889,704 because of the scam. The hearing in the case is scheduled to be held in September.
Local police began an investigation in August 2012 following anomalies, such as inflated invoices, reported by financial institutions.
A week ago, police arrested a 67-year-old woman reportedly the main accomplice in the scandal. She owns a smash repairs business in the city. She was charged on 25 offences, including 14 counts of financial deception and fraud.
