#finding the dos

(Person who asked about fellows) I looked on the department website and on there their names were listed as 'emeritus professors' instead, I Googled this and it said they're professors who are semi retired? Do you know anything more about what that means in terms of their role within college/uni? (No worries at all if not, just curious now!)

Ah yeah, emeritus professors are pretty much retired. They hang around college, give an occasional lecture, drink a lot of wine, chill, but don’t actually do much (or any) teaching. So the emeritus professor won’t really be involved in your education in any significant way.

Is there a difference between a fellow and professorial fellow? The info on the college website I was looking at separated the two so was just wondering if there was any fundamental differences, one of the professorial fellows specialises in an area I'm interested in, will they have the same role as any other fellow? Will I have supervisions from them or do they just do lectures or something? This blog is my life btw, thank you for everything I'll be so sad to see you go ❤❤

Mmm usually any kind of title before Fellow (like The Blah Blah Fellow) means they’re less actively involved in college life buuut professorial fellow doesn’t sound exactly like that. I did a quick google and I think it’s just like a special, very legit fellow, which probably points to them likely being the DoS...or being too busy/important to DoS.

ahh wait how do you find college DOS? is it the same as the fellows?

Right so here’s Kings HSPS page

See there, under James Laidlaw it says he’s the Director of Studies for Part I. That means he’s the main DoS (more on that here). Some of those other fellows might be Pt II DoS’s. 

If the college page doesn’t make it as clear as this, eg it just lists all the fellows, you have to kinda detective around. You can google the people and find their pages within their Cam department, which will sometimes tell you (like “X’s speciality is in ____ and she is also the St. Catz DoS” or something). If you can’t find it anywhere, you’ve basically got to guess. Discount anyone who is called like ‘The __________ Fellow’ those will be special associated people, pretty much never DoS’s. Then just look for whoever seems the most senior.
