Surviving in the deserts is far more complicated and difficult than in open waters or in wilderness. You do not have endless access to food or water. You cannot find shelters very often. There is no guarantee that anyone would come to your rescue and no way to light a signal. Well , If you do manage to get the necessities to light a fire, the nights are too cold to light it and the days are too bright for anyone to even spot your signals. You can be almost certain that you are dead if you lost your way. So it is better to learn a few things on desert survival before you think about venturing in the desert.
Ration
First things first. You have to make sure that your supplies last for as long as they can. Do not take a bite or gulp down in the first sign of hunger. Your urine helps you figure that out, If your urine is dark, it means that it's time for some
water and hopefully some food.
Clothing
Try to cover most of your skin so that it minimizes evaporation and slows down the loss of water. It may feel extremely uncomfortable but it will help you live a little longer.
Equipment
Pack a survival kit and lots of water. A flashlight with some extra batteries is a huge advantage in the desert. A mirror will be helpful too as it can reflect light to distant passersby or aircraft.
Shelter
If you do manage to find a shelter with some amount of water, it would better to stay there for a longer time. Else you could spend the day time resting or having quick naps and move in night time. This saves a lot of energy and people can spot your flash light at night.
Seek water
Water is more important than shelter. If you can spot animal herds it would be wise to follow them as they could be moving towards water or even a village. It is not advised to cut open a cactus as they mostly contain a thick, fibrous fluid and you could hurt yourself doing so.
Even after all of these it is better to not get lost in the first place. Try to stick with the gang. And again if you are going on a desert trip try to purchase a satellite phone and a personal location beacon. This helps you stay in touch and people will know where to find you. Desert survival is not any easy feat to accomplish. It is always better to be safe than sorry.
