Finding Your Feet

Billed as the feel good film of the year, Finding Your Feet has an excellent cast.  Just a shame that the funniest moments all appear in the trailer and the sentimentality is laid on with a trowel.

On the eve of retirement a middle class judgemental snob (Imelda Staunton) discovers that her husband (John Sessions) is having an affair with her best friend. A proud woman she takes refuge with Bif her bohemian sister (Celia Imrie) in a poor inner city council estate.  Here surrounded by her gang of plucky third agers (Timothy Small, Joanna Lumley amongst them) she comes to realise that there is more to life than material gain.

Middle class - rude and heartless, bohemian poor - saintly and loving, is the first trope that grates. We are then fed a checklist of mawkish scenarios to tug at the heartstrings. Yes life is sad but it is more nuanced than this and when Bif is diagnosed with lung cancer the impact has long since waned. Aimed firmly at those who liked the Best Exotic Marigold Hotel there will be those who love it. I thought it lacking in shade and humour.
