I'm really sorry to ask this but: Why did Newt choose Thomas to be the one to do it? Why not do it himself?? Did he really want Thomas to take responsibilty for the things he has done? P/S: i really wanna know and i like ur blog so
omg I’ve posted about this before - it’s merely my opinion, but if it matters to you, it’s worth saying:)
We all know how Newt yelled about how much he hates Thomas and that was basically one of the last things he said before dying. We’re all deeply convinced that he was saying it solely because he wasn’t in his right mind, and it’s somewhat confirmed canonically:
“KILL ME!” And then Newt’s eyes cleared, as if he’d gained one last trembling gasp of sanity, and his voice softened. “Please, Tommy. Please.”
Which basically means insanity had already won over Newt and his very last words were the only conscious things he said in the entire chapter. Very easy to assume that whatever he was saying before is not to be believed.
This is where I disagree.
Newt, of course, was down a one-way path to insanity, but he didn’t conjure his hatred towards Thomas out of thin air, did he?
if we look at what we know about the boys from the glade, it’s easily evident that Newt hated the place more than anybody else. Enough to have attempted suicide. And it’s only natural that after finding out that Thomas was the one who placed him into his hell, he couldn’t simply move on and forgive Thomas.
I’m not saying he hated Thomas all along ever since he found out Thomas used to be involved with WICKED. He trusted Thomas. But there was a teeny tiny part in him that didn’t entirely forgive Thomas, although he worked on it.
“I hated the place, Tommy. I hated every second of every day. And it was all … your … fault!”
and yet, as i’ve mentioned before, he worked on fully forgiving Thomas and he would have succeeded if there wasn’t a very particular obstacle called The Flare.
now, if you’ve read The Kill Order, you’d know how the virus affects one’s mind. You start feeling angry. Unreasonably, purposelessly, unwittingly angry. Slowly, you start craving violence. And through all this, you’re still a human. You’re still (half-)sane and it’s scary as fuck because you feel yourself drifting on the edge of sanity.
what does this give us? Newt maybe had this little tiny grudge against Thomas and as the virus kicked in, he suddenly felt very angry at nothing in particular. Obviously, without realizing it, subconsciously, he directed all this rage towards that little thing that nagged him - Thomas.
and this is why he was convinced he hates the poor bloke. Every little fleeting feeling of hurt or anger he ever felt towards Thomas for putting him into the maze was DOUBLED and TRIPLED and as much as Newt tried to control it - he couldn’t
so well, it is my guess that he simply wanted revenge. Newt isn’t the little innocent angel that this fandom makes him out to be. he has a dark side (which The Flare so generously brought up in him)
“Make amends! Repent for what you did!”
“It was all your fault! You could’ve stopped them when the first Creators died. You could’ve figured out a way. But no! You had to keep it going, try to save the world, be the hero. And you came to the Maze and never stopped. All you care about is yourself! Admit it! Gotta be the one people remember, the one people worship! We should’ve thrown you down the Box hole!”
Flare did not cause these thoughts. All the Flare does is make you angry and violent, the rest is the result of your scared and sick brainwork. Note the wording - scared and sick, yet still your brainwork. Newt actually had the above mentioned thoughts and the Flare just did a good job bringing them up.
Before you jump onto my face with confrontations, just think about it. We all DO have these fleeting moments when we’re annoyed at our friends and we think things about them we’ll never voice and we never really mean them anyway. that’s basically it, i don’t think Newt meant the words, but they certainly crossed his mind at some point.
um, so yeah, back to the main point and your question - it was simply revenge for everything that Thomas had done to him (and i bet his decision to get thomas to “make amends” and kill him was made much with the assistance of the flare)
