Weaving

I picked up this great placemat at Ikea for just $2.50.  After hitting the scraps drawer in the craft room, I added a variety of ribbon leftovers for children to weave in and out of the openings.  The weaving allows students to work their pincer muscles, the same muscles used for holding a pencil.  Below, a child has unwoven a few ribbons as preparation for beginning her work.

She was engaged in this work for almost an hour and was reluctant to put it away when it came time for lunch. We simply had her set it aside to resume later on in the afternoon.

I love that these materials make for such a lovely display on the shelf after a child has used them.  I may hang it on a small hook or nail on the wall, not only freeing up valuable shelf space, but respecting the weaving as the art it is.
