Harry's Cafe de Wheels is the iconic pie cart located in Woolloomooloo near Finger Wharf and Fleet Base East. Dating back to the Depression and frequented by cabbies, sailors, party crowds and celebrities, it became part of the city's nightlife due to its late-night meals. Harry 'Tiger' Edwards opened the original caravan cafe, named 'Harry's' in 1938 near the gates of the Woolloomooloo Naval Yard. Edwards served with the AIF in WWII and during this time the cafe was not operational. While in the Middle East, Harry was nicknamed 'Tiger' due to his boxing prowess. Upon his return in 1945, the cafe re-opened and has operated since. The name Harry's Cafe de Wheels was a result of a 1940s council requirement that mobile food caravans had to move a minimum of 30cm each day. The rule was obeyed and the name was changed. The name again changed temporarily to 'Cafe de Axle' when the wheels were stolen. The van later attracted fame as a tourist attraction and was frequented by celebrities including Frank Sinatra, Elton John and Marlene Dietrich. In 1974, Colonel Sanders ate a pie at the cafe and a picture of his visit still hangs in the caravan. Harry operated the caravan for a further 30 years before selling the business to Alex Kuronya in 1975. In 1970, current owner Michael Hannah returned from a tour of duty in Vietnam and his first stop after disembarking the HMAS Sydney was Harry's. In 1988 he made an offer to buy the business and the exchange took place on Australia Day 1988. The cafe still specialises in the same basic food that was popular in the 1940s, including pies and mushy peas. During the 1970s the cafe introduced hot dogs, mostly to appeal to American sailors, although its pies remained a staple favourite.
