I haven’t played it since around when it came out, and I only played it for like... 8 hours max. I haven’t played it since but I keep an eye on the updates.
I’ve always had this little hope that hey, at some point they’ll have private servers so I can at least play with my friends and we can all ignore the microtransaction dumb shite and help each other out and generally have a good time. Playing by yourself is really, really unfun and unbalanced, and I don’t want to socialize with random strangers.
Now they reveal that private servers are going to be a pay feature, eliminating the single, one thing I really wanted from this game (to play with friends).
I’ve already paid for this game. I refuse to pay more than I have already.
"Setting it up to be monetized" Who would buy anything for it?
There’s always someone who’ll bite at least once. I haven’t been keeping my finger on the pulse of this game but I heard that while it doesn’t have a huge player base it does have some who have been holding on, so maybe someone will want to drop money for in game benefits. They’ve already put in cosmetic goods for pay and stuff in the code looks like they’re prepping up for lootbox shenanigans. Who knows. Who knows.
🔥 Fallout 76 I really, really would like to know from your perspective what you think of the game. I heard quite much about it, the good, the bad, the miscellaneous. But you're (alas from the people I know) the person that knows the most about the Fallout series so I wondered what your thoughts are of Fallout 76
Let me roll up my metaphorical sleeves here. I’m going to put this under a readmore because it’s gonna go a little long.
Here’s the lowdown on my experience with 76-
I bought the ‘nylon bag’ edition as a birthday gift to myself and I really wanted all the collector’s goodies.
I was only able to play a small amount of the BETA before release because I kept missing the time slots it was open.
When the game was finally released, I wasn’t able to play it because they didn’t ship my stuff until after release date, and then it arrived the day before I was about to go visit my friend for Thanksgiving so there was no time to try it.
By the time I did install it and play it, this was after all the news had broken about it’s overall buggy-ness and it’s sale prices and such had dropped 76% percent.
Including BETA playtime, I have probably played 76 for less than 15 hours. For comparison’s sake I’ve played at least a thousand hours of Fallout New Vegas, Fallout 3, and Fallout 4 (combined that is- the actual numbers on Steam probably add up to less than a thousand but I know I’ve played more than what’s listed there because I didn’t always have the games linked to Steam).
So why have I barely played 76?
Because I find it frustrating and pointless. The environments look generally nice (until you notice repeating textures) and initially I really, really wanted to explore the whole map and see all the environments and new critters. But I find the game a slog to actually play.
Here’s the thing, they said you could play alone if you wanted but the game is absolutely not geared to allow you to do that. There are massive amounts of frustrating enemies everywhere. You run into an enemy that you can actually take on in a fight? Cool, there’s forty of them and they’re coming out of the walls. Just one enemy ahead? Neat, it’s level 45 and you’re level squirrel fart, and it’s going to hock a loogie at you and infect you with the Night Squirts or some other horrible disease that will further disable your ability to be even slightly effective at anything. You managed to sneak around the enemies? You’re thirsty and starving and all the meat and vegetables you harvested a little while ago have already spoiled. You can still eat it, but it might give you the Night Squirts too. Or radiation, which will damage your health bar and prevent you from fully healing- if you could fully heal, but all your health packs are gone because the legion of redskin potato people kept slapping your ass every-time you looked in the direction of a building.
The straw that broke my camel was that I had like three somewhat decent guns that could actually do damage, but because the game is a constant battle against entropy at all possible levels (probably to support future monetization) they were breaking down. So I started to collect shitty guns because I was hoping I could break them down and use their parts to repair my good guns. I went to a work bench and somehow managed to dismantle all three of my good guns for scrap when I intended to dismantle the shitty ones. So this left me with just the crap guns that did basically nothing. I stopped playing then and never went back.
Some people enjoy games that are a constant struggle. I don’t.
don't feel bad about not doing well. I've never played an mmo before so I suck !! P sure they said the game would be a lot harder when playing solo, so I'm sure there are plenty of others struggling with it too. Its much easier with a friend
When it releases, I’ll probably try it with voice. It seems easier to interact with people that way... It still makes me iffy but. Well it’s a video game. It’s not worth stressing too much. With luck though maybe we’ll run across each other...

My husband kept getting people shooting him (but since it’s nerf’d unless you fire back he just ignored them) though he did meet one guy who played with him. And then the guy who just kept saying “power armor... power armor... power armor” the whole time ahahahaha. He cancelled his pre-order in the end though, planning on picking it up after it’s cheaper. If it had a local co-op mode (we’re on Xbox) it would be a no-brainer, but as is it’s just kinda... eh.
My experience was pretty peaceful, I had someone help me when I got incapacitated at one point... People were mostly just interested in discussing game mechanics or actual game stuff rather than being dickheads to each other, so that was nice.
I did have one guy take a couple of pot shots at me- first time I thought it was a mistake because I was covered in enemies at the moment, but they took another snipe at me once the enemies were all dead. It didn’t do much though and it was easy enough to slip away...
It’s funny because I was also considering if I should cancel my preorder, but I -do- want the extra goodies that come with it, so...
I'm holding out for private servers for a lot of those reasons. then me and friends can just be bad together
Being a total screw up with friends is the best way to be a screw up.
In my 76 experience there were a lot more players than I expected (I expected like 20, possibly 30, it was more like 50 I think?), but even still I was able to wander around on my own with no contact with anyone else for most of the time, and a lot of the time people just flat out weren’t interested in interacting anyway.
But having a friend would be nice. I think a lot of the reason I felt discouraged/wasn’t doing well is because a lot of areas there’s an assumption (I feel) that you’d have a friend. It’s hard to fight off 20 enemies with guns by yourself and all.
you can't be playing any worse than me, who stumbled upon a island called DEATHCLAW ISLAND and proceeded to investigate instead of turning around. What happens next will shock you.
I ALSO FOUND A DEATHCLAW. I didn’t actually see it I just saw it’s name tag, heard it roar, and had the ground shake. I ran like a little bitch immediately, as my normal MO of ‘death isn’t real’ in video games doesn’t apply as well in MMOs, because there’s actually consequences (minor, but still a consequence).
Regardless it was hard to shake off that mindset and I died due to a lot of fumb duckery...
Found mole miners. Get killed by mole miners. Run back into their territory to get my stuff back (panic and can’t hit the right buttons to collect my stuff, die again). Grab both paper bags of stuff, low health, run out. Killed by a swarm of low level pathetic insects instead because of course I’m out of healing items as I’m fleeing.
Before that, died by gravity because I slipped off a radio tower I had scaled.
I have 0 confidence in myself that I’ll ever become a competent player, since I tend to screw around too much. Example: I accidentally scrapped my three favorite/strongest weapons because I thought I was repairing them. Now I have I have to rely on a dinky peashooter that does basically nothing.
(Negativity under cut)
I’m ... I’m just. Great at video games. This is why I don’t like MMOs though- I see everyone else around me succeeding and I get this “:) Ah, good to see I’m really that bad” feeling, and I hate it. I’m not trying to make it a ‘pity me’ thing, I know the answer is to ‘git gud’ but honestly I’ve never really gotten ‘gud’ at any game. It’s why I prefer to play alone- I can just mess around and not care. At the very least I don’t need to be on a team with anyone, so I’m not dragging anyone else down with my shitty gameplay. Unless I try to help someone else in a fight, in which case I’m sure I’m going to accidentally hit someone.
I hope they have private servers soon, I might feel less foolish around people I know.
