I haven't posted in a long time. I finally finished my education and also found out I was pregnant BUT I finally finished one of my Grandma's stories 😭 it's digital or paperback. Waiting on my author copies to come in so I can give Grandma one. I can't wait for her to read it. She wanted me to add in my own writing style. Plus I added details relevant to the time period.

Week 5 Blog

Summary

Andrea and Ena’s mother are talking about how she’s known Román for many years. She used to be in love with him, but he humiliated her. She ended up marrying Luis, and got pregnant with Ena and it changed her world and marriage. Ena’s mother asks Andrea to talk to Ena and try to convince her Román’s not a good guy. Ena comes over to see Román. Andrea feels uneasy about them being together and goes to the roof and overhears them talking through the open window of Román’s room. Ena says to Román, “What did you think? That I’d marry you?” She also says, “You know you’re in my hands. Finally this nightmare will end…” Ena talks to Andrea about the reason she’s been acting distant. She admits she was afraid of Román and knew about her mother’s past with him. She also tells Andrea she really loves Jamie. Andrea is depressed and very sad when Ena moves to Madrid. Román kills himself. The reason for his suicide was because Gloria denounced him and he was going to go to jail. Juan seems to be the most affected by this, he sobbs for the first time. Juan continues to beat and abuse Gloria. Andrea receives a letter from Ena saying there is work in Madrid for her. The novel ends with Andrea leaving Barcelona and going to Madrid to start a new life.

Critical Analysis

Andrea depends on Ena for her happiness, whenever something bad happens between them Andrea feels lost and sad because the time she spends with Ena seems to be her only happy moments. Carmen Laforet developed this theme throughout the novel and now towards the end it continues to appear. Ena moves and Andrea suddenly feels very sad. In the novel she states, “On the day I went to say good-bye to Ena, I felt terribly depressed.” This feeling she felt continued for days, until she finally got the letter from Ena and decided to move. That’s when she began to be happy again.

Personal Response

I’m very happy to have finished this first novel, my overall impression of this book was I thought it was very interesting and real. It was a story about a girl around my age so I could relate to some things. I enjoyed reading this novel and I hope my next book will be even better! In the last few chapters I read this week the section I found most interesting was when Andrea decided to leave Barcelona. I can’t believe she would leave her family to go live with a friend. However, I do understand why she made that sacrifice. That opportunity she got really would change her life. I wonder how her life is after she moves to Madrid.
