Texas is officially the 10th state in the U.S. to ban the trade of shark fins.
Eddie Lucio III has announced that his shark fin bill, HB 1579, has been signed into law by Governor Greg Abbott. This new bill will now recognize acts "relating to the sale and purchase of shark fins or products derived from shark fins" as a criminal offense. The bill goes into effect on the first of July.

200,000 shark fins have been seized in Ecuador, worth up to $1.5M, bound for illegal export to Asian markets.
A Galapagos Conservation Trust spokesperson said, “The seizure of so many shark fins on mainland Ecuador, just 1,000km away from the Galapagos Islands, is deeply distressing. Sharks play an essential role in the marine ecosystem and removing them can cause the entire marine ecosystem to collapse.”
The New Jersey Senate has passed a bill to ban the trade, sale and distribution of shark fin products.
The New Jersey State Senate has passed legislation to ban the shark fin trade, including sale and distribution.
Sen. Kip Bateman said: “Eliminating the market for shark fins is crucial to shark protection and I hope that one day we will be celebrating the end of this industry all together."
The bill must now pass through the Assembly.
