I wanted to feature my 5 gallon aquarium as my first official blog post for a couple of reasons: firstly because it is currently only 72 hours old and will make for a perfect “progress story” as it ages and grows, and secondly because it truly represents this blog’s theme of “Life Behind the Glass.”
So a quick back story... I’ve kept fish tanks since I was 8 years old. Some have been large and some have been small, some were filled with gaudy fish and silly ornaments, and others have been filled with natural elements and a few live plants. Only recently have I been attempting to keep a fully planted tank: CO2 injection, high output LED lighting, exhaustingly researched nano species, the full experience.
This marks the second incarnation of this specific tank, a Fluval Spec V. I first set it up about a year ago after my son Casper was born. Between the responsibilities of being a new father and a cripplingly nasty bout of hair algae, the tank wasn’t long lived. So roughly 10 months after decommissioning the aquarium, I’ve scrubbed it out, ordered new plants, and set the whole experience up again!
Here is a rundown of my setup.
Tank: Fluval Spec V (white)
Light: Finnex FugeRay Planted+
Heater: Marina Submersible Heater (mini)
Substrate: Flourite Black Sand (blended with brown gravel)
Oxydator: Sochting Mini-Oxydator (helps reduce algae, beneficial for invertebrates)
CO2: I’m currently dosing with Flourish Excel, but I plan to move to a new injected CO2 system in the next week. I will be blogging about it as I set it up in the coming days.
And now for the best part! The green part!
So this is the primary viewing angle of this tank setup. You can see every species planted currently, and I will feature each with photos and names as we journey through the tank below.
Giant Hairgrass (Eleocharis montevidensis)
Cryptocoryne wendtii ‘Red’ (the largest leaves in the image below)
Anubias barteri nana ‘Narrow Leaf’
Hygrophila Lanceolata Araguaia
Gratiola viscidula ‘Short's hedgehyssop’
Vesicularia reticulata ‘Erect Moss’
Pogostemon helferi ‘Downoi Little Star’
Glossostigma elantinoides
So that’s every species I have growing so far! I think I am going to look for some Red Root Floaters and possibly a darker Buce variety that will be a nice foil and contrast to all of the rich green.
Time will tell how these grow for me, though I have noticed that the Glosso has perked toward the light and stretched up about 1/4 inch since planting them.
Stay tuned for more adventures in nano planted tanks and I will be following up with more blogs about this tiny living world soon!
