I watched a second Finnish movie on day 9 of #31daysofhorror : "Rare Exports: A Christmas Tale" (2010, Jalmari Helander). This has been on my list for years just hadn't gotten around to watching. I love that it takes the notion of a peaceful Christmas and turns it upside down, making Santa (and his helpers) the villain. Add in an old legend, a Finnish snowscape, a touch of gore, and a bit of humor and you get one brilliant film! And some scenes are even quite touching... Highly recommended. This is currently on Shudder. #rareexports #rareexportsachristmastale #finnishhorror #finnishcinema #christmashorror #xmashorror
F is for Finland on day 9 of #31daysofhorror and I watched "Bodom" (Lake Bodom) from 2016, directed by Taneli Mustonen. This was really good and I definitely recommend if you want to check out a solid new slasher film with some unexpected turns. The story centers on a group of teenagers who go to the scene of some hideous murders that took place decades earlier (the Lake Bodom murders of 1960). I thought the film was engaging, as I constantly was trying to figure out the motivations of the characters, and it did a good job at taking the viewer to some challenging places/situations to heighten the sense of dread. The film's ultimate purpose I felt is to say that evil is cyclical. And don't go in creepy woods...
