Fire Prevention Week is observed each year during the week of October 9th in commemoration of the Great Chicago Fire, which began on October 8, 1871, and caused devastating damage. Before the use of fire hydrants and engines, communities relied on the help of neighbors to put out fires. This 1836 bucket has Penhaller, the owner's name on it. After the fire, buckets were left in a pile and the owner found his or her bucket and carried it home. Let’s learn how to prevent fires so we don’t have to grab our water buckets!
