The call’s over, the adrenaline still buzzing in your veins when you slip away behind the line of trees…and find Brett Richards already there, pacing like something caged.

“Brett…”

He turns fast, eyes flashing silver in the moonlight. “You shouldn’t be here.”

“Then stop walking away from me,” you say, stepping closer anyway.

And that’s all it takes.

One of his hands cups the back of your head and the other finds your waist under your coat, firm and sudden, and he backs you into a tree in one smooth motion…still full of control, but charged. The bark presses into your spine as he cages you in, body close, heat bleeding through both of your bunker gear.

“You’re playin with fire, kid” he breathes out, dark gaze dropping to your mouth.

Your breath catches, but you lean in instead. “Good thing we’re firefighters then…”

His restraint snaps.

He kisses you…slow at first, then deeper, hungrier, like he’s been holding it back for too long. His grip tightens at your waist, thumb brushing heated skin just under the hem of your shirt, sending a sharp spark up your spine.

You arch into him without thinking, fingers dragging through his messy curls, pulling him closer. The smell of him, sweat and smoke…hits you like a drug.

A low growl vibrates in his chest, the sound rough and warning and wanting all at the same time.

His mouth drags along your jaw for a second, breath hot against your skin, his stubble scratching a warm path down your neck, before he drags back up and catches your lips again, harder this time…like he’s testing the edge of his control and losing ground.

Then he stops, barely.

Forehead pressed to yours, breath panting and uneven, his hand still anchored at your waist like he can’t let go.

“You keep pushing me,” he says, voice low and strained, “and I’m not sure I’ll be able to stop.”

Your lips brush his, slow, deliberate. “Then don’t, please.”

His grip flexes…and this time, he doesn’t pull away.
