Zuko Plot 183: Jet's Truth
While dying under Lake Laogai, Jet can only reminisce about the mistakes and losses in his life. He misses his parents most of all. Letting his eyes close for one final time, he is startled when they open again, but this time to his childhood home, unburnt, with his mother come to wake him for breakfast with his old name on her lips. What!?!?
Jet gets sent back in time to right before his home is attacked by the rough rhinos. Jet managed to save his parents but then learns that his mother is actually a FIREBENDER and had been hiding it because she was a deserter! With fresh, older eyes, he suddenly realizes that his home isn't how he had been remembering it. Turns out he had grown up in mixed village of Earth kingdom refugees and fire nation deserters. The Rough Rhinos came to the village to wipe them all out for treason.
What's worse! Apparently HE could be a firebender! Because of his own Mother! His mother who was from the FIRE NATION! Jet recalls so many times in his previous life where his friends had commented about how warm he ran, and he'd ASSURED them it was because of his hate for the fire nation, but could it be that he was what he'd despised all along!?
Jet has a meltdown, his tiny body unable to handle so many older emotions. His mom calls out to him with a name he hadn't heard in years since before dying, and he snaps. "My NAME is JET!" He shouts at his parents and says that he hates them and all of the Fire nation and runs away.
He doesn't remember exactly what he'd done the first time, he'd been too distressed by the massive loss, and now he's distressed once again. Somehow he manages to stumble into his two oldest friends, smellerbee and longshot. Together with people he knows, even if they don't know him yet, he tries to pull himself together.
And then he discovers his fears were true. After sitting and stewing for hours and nights, trying to come to terms with his past experiences and that it was the earth kingdom that killed him and Apparently the Fire nation who birthed him, he accidentally throws sparks and everything crashes around him again. Did simply knowing he could be a bender make this start happening!? (He repressed himself due to trauma so much he never sparked in his first life before he died. Coming to terms with himself and the Fire nation he probably would've started had he not died so young)
Fearing what his friends might do if they found out, or what danger he may cause them if he stayed, Jet runs away from his family once again. He spends years hopping from place to place, doing his best to help the Earth kingdom, but not sticking around or risking forming bonds like he had his first time. Until the wanted posters appear. Not his own, those had been around for quite a while now. No… the ones for "Prince Zuko: traitor to the throne." The ones with the spitting image of Lee's face plastered on them, scar and all!
The strangest thing is, Jet doesn't remember ever seeing these wanted posters before… Could lee have time traveled too?? And if he did, who's to say someone else didn't as well? With a goal in mind now, Jet tracks down Zuko, instead finding some guy with a Blue Spirit mask. Together they continue to fight the Fire nation while Jet searches for Lee, only to find out later that he was with him THIS WHOLE TIME!
Zuko hadn't revealed himself because he had no idea Jet hadn't done something like this the first time around. He was sent back in time by his angst coma and so never got to learn Jet's fate or history from the Gaang. So he thinks it's a weird coincidence that Jet is looking for a guy named Lee.
Once Zuko gets outed as the Blue Spirit to him, Jet is livid and accidentally flings sparks again. Zuko, completely stunned, offers to teach Jet how to control his fire. Between fighting with each other, fighting the Fire Nation together, and teaching/learning Firebending, the years fly by until at last the avatar awakens. Now they can only hope the Gaang remembers the past too, or it's gonna be hell for both of them.
