May 24th Long Weekend

Today is Victoria Day. When I was a kid we called it Firecracker Day. In those days it was perfectly legal for children to set off firecrackers. And we loved it. For a nickle, you could purchase a package of firecrackers that were designed to be set off as one string and produce a series of bangs sounding something like a machine gun but we always took them apart and set them off individually. Every year we were warned about the dangers involved and how someone could lose an eye and, usually there was a follow-up story about some kid who did; but we felt that one kid out of so many thousands was a small price to pay. Then they made it illegal for young people under the age of sixteen to possess firecrackers but by then I was old enough that I wasn’t much interested anymore. I don’t know what the laws are today - probably even more restrictive. I do know that the kind of firecrackers we favored are now illegal for anyone to buy or sell. There are those who really like the highly-sanitized, government-approved totally-safe world in which we live. I’m not one of them.
