the station was cold and quiet. the clock on the wall read 23:56. it was pretty late, you knew that, but the exhaustion hasn’t hit you yet. you knew the second your head hit the pillow in the bunks, you would get a call. you rested on a recliner in the lounge room, some random show playing on the tv in the back. your mind was blank, just lost in your own thoughts.
being a first responder isn’t easy, it’s hard for you to get along with other people outside of your work. mostly because of the things you’ve seen, regular people would go crazy if they’d seen the things you had. that’s why dating hadn’t gone well for you over the past few months. you needed someone that understood what you gone through, not sympathy— just understanding. it’s important working on the front lines to not take things home with you. that’s one of the first things you learned in schooling, but, occasionally, things just hit harder, and it’s hard to keep up that rule.
your department had a shared space between the ems workers and the firefighters, you both worked in unison. most of time, for stressful medical calls, the firefighters would also be called out for extra hands. there was one firefighter that you couldn’t get off your mind even if you wanted to. anakin skywalker.
he was cocky, you knew that. he flirted with every living thing, but he was definitely gorgeous. his uniform always showed off his muscles in the right ways, his blue eyes always focused at the tasks before him. he was practically eye candy. you were so lost in thought you didn’t even hear the door creak open from the bunk rooms.
“still awake?” a voice said from behind you. you sat up a little, peaking from behind the recliner. there he was, anakin. his hair was a bit disheveled from sleep, his uniform still intact. the black shirt clung tightly to his biceps, he was wearing the standard pants and boots.
“oh, yeah. i couldn’t sleep.” you answered, standing up from out of the recliner and stretching your limbs. anakin’s eyes flickered over your figure, before moving back to your face.
he nodded, “yeah, i get that. yall have been pretty busy, getting a lot of calls. hard to shake off the adrenaline.”
he moved into the kitchen, opening the large metal fridge to grab an energy drink, popping it open.
“those can give you heart attacks,” you teased, you also drank energy drinks, you just wanted to pick on him a little.
he scoffed, taking a sip. “i know. i’m not that stupid. they can give you heart palpitations.”
“what flavor is it?” you asked, eyeing the can as you followed him into the kitchen, leaning against the island.
“redbull coconut. wanna sip?” anakin replied, handing the drink over to you.
you nodded, taking the drink from his hands, your fingers brushing slightly. you put the redbull to your lips, taking a sip. “oh, this is good.”
anakin laughed, “i know. it tastes like candy.”
“barely even tastes like coconut.” you giggled, handing the drink back over to him.
“yeah.. i—“ he was cut off by the stations alarm sounding.
“medic 42, engine 4.”
you both groaned in unison, shuffling starting to echo throughout the station.
“see you there, then.” anakin chuckled, placing down his drink and jogging out to the garage. you followed closely behind, getting into the ambulance and waiting for your partner.
you read the dispatcher report, some sort of overdose.
the door opened and in came your partner, obi-wan, he was seasoned paramedic but still had some fun left in him.
“what’s the report say?” he asked, buckling his seatbelt.
the garage opened and you drove out, starting up the sirens. the firetruck following close behind you. “says some type of overdose. brother in law can’t get inside the patient’s apartment. says the patient uses a lot of drugs.”
obi-wan nodded along, “great, alright.”
you drove fast along the road, heading over to the apartment building.
when you arrived, you put on your gloves and got out the stretcher. placing the go bags on top. you rolled the stretcher down the hall, cops were already littered throughout the hallways of the apartment building. the brother in law standing off to the side with a worried expression.
a male cop came up to you, “i’m smelling something from inside…” he hinted at. you sighed, rubbing your temples.
“you think it’s a doa?” you whispered, making sure the brother-in-law couldn’t hear you.
the cop sighed and placed his hands in his pockets, “yeah, has the distinct smell of death. either something died in there or we have a dead body.”
you frowned, you never liked calls like this. you liked to help and save people— it was a hard pill to swallow when you realize you were too late, and nothing can be done.
you saw anakin and his other firefighter buddy walk over to the door with an axe. of course anakin was the one to break down the door. he hit at the door knob, wood chips flying everywhere. the second they got the door unlocked anakin and his partner’s face grimaced, the smell hitting you next. your nose scrunched up, yeah— this is definitely a doa.
obi-wan and a cop went in, and came out a couple seconds later. giving you a nod, yep, this was out of our expertise now.
you sighed, rolling back the stretcher down the hall, letting obi-wan talk to the cops for a moment. anakin caught up to you, “hey, you good?”
you gave him a quick slide glance, “yeah, m’alright. just… i like helping people. it’s hard when they’re already gone.”
he nodded, “yeah… i get that. hey, when do you get off?”
“in about an hour, why?” you said, looking at him with a mix of confusion.
“there’s this great cafe down by the station, i get off soon too. they have real good breakfast food, if you’re up for it, we can talk more there? i’ll pay, don’t worry.”
you laughed softly, “that sounds like a date.”
“maybe it is,” anakin smirked, starting to jog off but suddenly turned around, yelling, “meet me there at 6, okay?”
you laughed softly to yourself, anakin was definitely a character.
you had changed out of your uniform into some lounge wear that you had worn to work, just something comfy that you had on hand. you didn’t really care if you looked good, anakin had already seen you at your worst anyway.
the cafe was small, the smell of coffee and pastries filling the air. anakin sat at a table near a window, waving you over with a smile. “hey!”
you smiled back at him, walking over to where he sat. he got up before you walked up, pulling out the chair for you. you were genuinely surprised that anakin had some chivalry to him, you thought he was a lost cause from how cocky he was. you mumbled a thank you and sat down, watching as he moved to sit down as well. he must’ve done the same thing as you, wearing something comfortable that he had on hand. you were both exhausted, dark circles underneath your eyes from long shifts.
“what’s good here?” you asked, skimming over the menu.
“i think the crepes are pretty good, their coffee is amazing. i get some before every shift,” he answered, pointing to the crepes on the menu. your eyes read over the items, everything did look pretty good— well, everything sounded good to you. you hadn’t eaten in god knows how long.
“how’d you find this place?” you said, looking up from the menu and into anakin’s eyes. up close, he was even more handsome. you never really got up close like this before, and you could feel your cheeks heating up slightly.
“wanted something other than starbucks,” he chuckled, “searched up closest coffee shops to the station and found this one. guess it’s not really just coffee though, but.. it works.”
a small silence fell over the both of you as you thought about what to order.
“you’re really pretty, y’know that?” he said softly, his voice barely above a whisper.
you perked up at that, “uh.. thank you.” you let out a nervous giggle, “you’re not bad looking yourself.”
“it’s really hard not to notice the gorgeous emt, i’ve been working up the courage to actually ask you out.” he chuckled nervously, you seemed somewhat surprised that he was also nervous. apparently, your thoughts about him were wrong. maybe he isn’t as egotistical as you thought.
“i check you out when you inspect the equipment,” you giggled, “always thought you were cute, just.. never said anything.”
anakin laughed, “really? i.. i didn’t think you noticed me like that.”
you smiled, “yeah, well.. i did.”
his eyes glanced over your face, zeroing in on your lips for half a second. his gaze was intense, it made your heart race in a way you hadn’t felt in a long time. he brought his hand up to place over yours, the one that sat freely on the table. his thumb brushing over your skin, “i think it’s nice.. yknow.. going out with other people in the field. they understand.”
you nodded, your mind slightly distracted by his touch but nonetheless still focusing on his words, “yeah.. i agree. i’ve tried dating other people, people that weren’t first responders or in the medical field, and it’s hard to.. i don’t know. get along with them? i mean, connect on a different level.”
“yeah, yeah, no i get what you mean.” he chuckled, “trust me, i have too.”
the date went pretty well, you talked about a lot of things.. some deep, some not. you ate some crepes, and drank some delicious coffee— this was definitely a good find from him. you knew you’d be going to this place before your shifts as well. and— you got along with him better than you thought you were going to, he was a character— but a good one. he had a side you never expected from him. you actually connected with him, it was nice meeting someone with a good personality and extremely good looks.
you both stood outside of the cafe, the cold air of the daybreak breezing past you.
“i had a good time,” anakin smiled, looking down into your eyes. he gently placed his hands on your waist, his touch so delicate that if you wanted to pull away you could. but, you didn’t. you didn’t want to.
you gave him a soft smile back, your hands placed on his chest. “i did too, thank you.”
unspoken words filled the air as you stood outside, the city traffic buzzing by the both of you.
anakin leaned in first, slowly, cautiously, but seeing you lean in as well, he closed his eyes until your lips met each other. it was small, yet intimate kiss. one that left you aching for more.
“can i take you on another date?” he asked softly against your lips.
“i’d like that.”
