The fire at the old Winter Palace motel had been a real scorcher. Half the thing was burnt to a crisp by the time they got there with the first truck, and Tarquin was already done with this fucked up night.
They had recovered two bodies so far, lyrium addicts likely given their location. Poor sods still didn't deserve this, even if it seemed they had been the point of origin.
He had mostly been on the roof, cutting vents to provide vertical ventilation. The boys on the ground needed someone to keep them safe, though walking along brittle shingles and shattered beams had its own dangers.
He trudged back to the truck and jerked off his gloves, throwing his helmet in the seat as grabbed his phone from the door pocket.
He could only imagine the calls and texts from Lena. She was off work tonight, but like everyone in town she had a scanner and would have heard the tones.
However it was almost more concerning when he swiped the photo of him, her, and Ashur on his lock screen to find a lone message. A sense of guilt hit him at the sparse words that held so much fear and worry as he cursed under his breath.
I'm going to try to be strong, Quin. But please call me. I need to know you're alright.
He hit the green button without thinking. She was the strongest soul he knew, made of more steel than any soldier. And he would remind her of that every day until she believed it.
