Shortly after 11am this morning, Pump 312 Gulgong was responded to a oil spill, spanning a couple of kilometres across town, and north along Cope Road. Thanks to the assistance of HAZMAT Tanker 387 Mudgee, our good friends from the NSW Rural Fire Service (not in the picture, but just as importantly there to help), and the NSW Police Force, crews were able to render the roadway safe just after 1pm. A huge shout out to our brothers over at 387 Mudgee, who are supporting the Pink Up Mudgee event this month, dressed in custom made Fire & Rescue NSW t-shirts. Mudgee is the first town in Australia to turn pink this month in an effort to raise breast cancer awareness and promote funding for the lifesaving nurses from the McGrath Foundation to be able to do their invaluable jobs. This year, 15,934 women and 150 men will receive the devastating news that breast cancer has come into their lives. Firefighter Leech and Sweeney kitted up and moving in on a fire. Teamwork ranks very highly on the priority list for firefighters. Good communication, rapid, positive and instinctive reactions to fire behaviour and the constant awareness of your surroundings make the difference between coming home safely, and not, and while you can train and practice regularly, nothing quite beats the experience you get on the job. The main thing about experience, though, is that a career of applying skills incorrectly makes for a very ineffective, and sometimes dangerous and unsafe firefighter.
