Actually I am going to speak on the Firefly animated season 2 possibility.
When I heard it was going to be animated, I was ECSTATIC. Because animation is the BEST possible way to bring this show back after so long.
Every time the possibility of a reboot was brought up, I was obviously excited but also scared, because how would you bring the show back when everyone looks so much older? Or when certain actors have passed away? You could have gotten away with it for a while but at a certain point there would just be no character continuity. It would be a huge elephant in the room if they didn’t address it. Not to speak for everyone but I feel like most people who wanted a reboot wanted the show to continue with its slow build towards an overarching plot that was set in motion in season 1. Of course the movie gave us some closure (and trauma) as to what the original reveal might have been, but for me I felt like it wasn’t nearly as satisfying as watching the slow build unfold over multiple seasons. But a reboot might feel the need to address the age gap by say, setting the show 10 years after the original season 1. Which… I wouldn’t want out of a Firefly show. I kind of wouldn’t care about that.
But with animation, IT DOESN’T MATTER! 😀 You can just draw everyone the way they looked back in 2002 and it WORKS. The original cast’s voices haven’t changed like crazy since they were all mostly adult/young adults during filming. And their acting can only have gotten better with time and experience.
Not to mention, animation and sci fi are a match made in heaven. Now I don’t care about so called “bad early 2000s cgi graphics.” I’m a Doctor Who fan. I think a limited budget forces creativity in storylines and how “outer space” is portrayed. What makes Firefly so iconic is the filming locations in the Mojave Desert that make space look like a western! But in the modern (Disney) age, there might have been pressure with a live action show for it to have all these crazy space graphics and plot lines because every sci fi show has to be Avengers Endgame now. And the massive budget required to pull off such a show might have worked against everything. But with animation? You have the best of both worlds!! You can show compelling, beautiful space scenes without having to compromise on scope because of budgetary restrictions. AND you can still have those iconic Western-esque planetary plot lines, even though the areas they used to film in are not so much cheap filming locations anymore.
One of my favorite shows of all time is ATLA, which is a perfect example of the power and versatility of animation. Every live action attempt failed to capture the world of Avatar because animation can just do so much more than TV-budget CGI to make fantasy worlds appear real and compelling. And for sci fi: Cowboy Bebop, Evangelion, etc etc etc portray these space or sci fi settings and machines and spaceships in such an iconic and lauded way. Or for non-anime art styles, think about how great shows like Arcane look! The worst animation can look is just okay, and the best it can look is actually mind blowing. And if you’ve seen the character sketches they showed, the art looks incredible already.
This is literally the best possible outcome I feel, for such a beloved show that means so much to so many fans. I will be SAT if/when this comes out
