Some people meet cute, some people meet ugly and some people meet trying to deal with a drunk mess

The next part of my Firehouse hostel AU. Follows after this and this.

CW for drunkenness and vomit. Not grafic but there.

Story starts under the cut because the cw stuff is literally the first sentence.

Tommy had been back at the Firehouse hostel a whooping three days when he opened a toilet stall and found a guy passed out in a puddle of his own puke.

"Oh for fuck’s sake."

He checked that the guy was actually just sleeping, not drowning in his own sick before he made his way to the reception where the guy with the slightly crooked nose (Tommy thought his name was Josh) was deeply engrossed in what looked like a smutty book.

"There’s a kid passed out on the toilet floor," he reported.

Josh let out a bone deep sigh. "Shit."

"He’s okay, I think, just drunk," Tommy amended, as Josh put his book down (Tommy was definitely right about the kind of book it was) and got out from behind the counter. Tommy followed him back to the bathroom a little unsure if he was still needed or if it would be rude to just disappear now that someone was taking care of the mess. But he would have felt bad for leaving Josh alone with it. The drunk guy was young but still pretty big.

Josh didn’t fuss long. He made a face at the stench but immediately started trying to get the guy back to consciousness.

"Come on, Eddie, wakey wakey. You can’t sleep here, man, other people need to use the bathroom."

The guy made a few disgruntled sounds but opened his eyes and with a bit of help managed to sit up.

"Can you get him upstairs into a shower while I clean up here?" Josh turned to Tommy. Tommy eyed Eddie who was falling asleep again. He shrugged.

"Sure. Do you have a bucket in case he isn’t done yet? You don’t want to have to clean the elevator."

"Good thinking."

Josh got up and disappeared for a moment in the supply closet next door. In the meantime Tommy dragged Eddie to his feet. There was no way he was staying upright without Tommy’s help, but he at least seemed to be able to keep his eyes open while Tommy half draged half carried him towards the elevator.  Josh appeared with a cleaning bucket he handed Tommy and pressed the button for him. 

"I’ll be with you in a minute," he promised.

He kept his promise and reappeared, with a towel, a few minutes after Tommy had maneuvered his charge into the shower for a good dousing. Together they pulled the soaked clothes off the guy. Thankfully the shower had done its job, not only in washing off the sick but also in waking Eddie up a little, so he was actually able to walk back to his room in his underwear and the towel without too much assistance.  Josh opened the room and let them in. Thankfully it was empty. Everyone else was apparently still out.

"Should we get him to take his boxers off, too?" Josh asked. "It’s not a good idea to let the mattress get wet." He hesitated "I just don’t know how he’d feel about having the gay guy take his pants off."

"Well if that’s a problem he’s shit out of luck, because gay guys seem to be the only ones available," Tommy shrugged.

Before Josh could properly react there was a wet splash next to them. Eddie had taken the matter in his own hands and was now sat butt naked on a bed Tommy could only hope was his. With the grace of the truly drunk he floped over and pulled the blanket over his shoulder.

"Uh uh uh." Josh slapped his shoulder. "This is a mixed dorm, you can’t sleep naked, buddy."

Eventually they managed to find and then wrangle Eddie into a pair of sweatpants that looked like they could be his, at least if that was his bed. They left the bucket next to it and then they were finally free.

"Thank you," Josh said once the dorm room door had closed behind them, "I don’t think I could have gotten him up here on my own."

"I take it this isn’t a regular occurrence then?" Tommy asked. He was aware that 95% of all hostel dwellers were college aged kids and drinking was very legal in Australia at that age, but he still eyed the ones who wouldn’t go a night without getting wasted with suspicion. 

Thankfully Josh shook his head "With Eddie? No. I think he just had a bit of a week. Maybe a month. I just know that his wife is not happy about him being here. Not my business of course. No, he went out with Buck and Hen and Ravi. Dangerous combination that. They’re probably downstairs in the bar and have completely forgotten that Eddie went to the bathroom half an hour ago." He rolled his eyes but Tommy could tell he was more amused than annoyed. "I should probably check on them and tell them that we put Eddie to bed. You’re officially released from any further wrangling drunk people. Unless you want to come and have a drink yourself?"

Tommy shook his head. "I have an interview tomorrow. I can’t afford a hangover. Another time maybe."

"Suit yourself." Josh gave a little wave and headed back downstairs. "And thanks again for the help."

Dying Embers AU

Firefighters have a series of responsibilities; among those are having long hours, answering distress calls, putting out fires (as they should be), etc. However, one of these responsibilities can slip their minds on occasion.

Because of their long hours and paramedic training, firefighters are one of the first lines of defense in multiple ways. Some fire stations house what's called a Safe Haven Baby Box, an anonymous drop off crate in which parents can surrender their babies if they don't have the means to care for them.

One morning, however, Firefighter Characters A, B, C, D, & E wake up to the sound of rustling from the direction of the baby box. Upon further investigation they find four infants in the safe haven -- in retrospect, they totally understand that the parents who surrendered them likely did so because of the raging blizzard outside, but the firefighters themselves can't leave for the same reason, nor can they transfer the babies to the proper channels until the snow lets up.

Without any other option, Characters A-E must find a way to care for the four infants for the next week while attending to their regular duties. That and, of course, attempting to keep the babies warm while not resorting to the obvious wrong choice (lighting a fire).

A bit more from my hostel AU. I've been on a roll this weekend.

Small note: I'm going to mess with some character's nationalities a little, mostly just because that is too many Americans in the same place in Australia. Those are normally a rare breed down there. So Chimney for example is just going to be full, regular Korean.

When Tommy returned downstairs to the common room after having settled in in his new room, Chimney wasn’t there yet, but Hen was on one of the couches, flipping through TV channels.

"So are you going out with us tonight, Kinard?" she asked as he settled down on the adjacent couch. "Maddie’s brother found this great place that does steaks for 10 dollars on Mondays. I know you don’t have much food since you‘ve been crossing state lines and all today." She wiggled her eyebrows suggestively. The giant signs alongside the freeway had been the bottom of many jokes between them when they had been travelling together.

"You joke, but I’m pretty sure I nearly got arrested when I landed in Alice Springs the first time, because I forgot I had an onion in my backpack," Tommy said. Hen’s eyebrows climbed up her forehead. "They had dogs, Hen," he said emphatically. 

"Huh, I guess they take those quarantine regulations more serious than we thought," she commented.

"Turns out it’s just the three of us tonight." Chimney plopped himself down on the couch next to Hen. "Buck and Maddie are working, and Eddie has plans to call his family tonight so he needs to wait for them to wake up. He’s got a wife and kid back home in Texas," he explained to Tommy, who nodded understandingly.  He was only glad he didn’t have anyone who cared about him in the states. The time difference alone would make it a nightmare.  On the other hand if he did have someone Tommy would probably not have left to go to the other side of the planet.

 

"I have to ask. What is the deal with the crow?"

The restaurant was decidedly nicer than Tommy had expected which had meant that, after far more discussion than Tommy would have deemed necessar, the bird Chimney had insisted on taking with them had to be hidden in Hen’s handbag.

"Leia and I met on a dark and stormy night," Chimney began in his best imitation of a horror movie narrator. Hen rolled her eyes so hard they nearly fell out of her head.

"She was part of some Halloween decoration and he stole her," she told Tommy.

"You are no fun,"  Chimney complained and Tommy felt like the last eight months hadn’t happened, so instantly familiar and comfortable was the banter between the two friends.

He had always been a bit jealous of how quickly Hen and Howie had clicked. Tommy had met Howie back in Melbourne, when he himself had only been in Australia for a week or two. Howie had only just arrived. They’d been roommates in a soulless mass accommodation at the edge of the CBD, together with eight other people. Tommy hadn’t originally cared much for the chatty Korean. In all honesty he had scared Tommy a little, so he had kept him at arms length. Until the fire alarm incident. Which they had sworn to never talk about. Ever. After that they had been tentative friends. At least that was what Tommy had assumed. Howie had decided they were bffs for life now, which Tommy only fully understood when two weeks later Howie bought a used van for a sandwich and a prayer, and decided they were going to follow an age old American tradition and go west.

'It’s a nice city,' he’d said, 'good bars, weird museums, tennis. But neither of us can afford staying here without a job much longer and I didn’t come here to be stuck in yet another big city just like any other on this planet.' And Tommy couldn’t disagree.

They’d met Hen in Adelaide where they’d stopped after nearly a week of bumbling about national parks and open roads. They’d stayed for three weeks and when they had decided to make their way to Perth Chimney had announced Hen would be coming with them. At that point they were already so tight Tommy was almost relieved to learn they still wanted to take him with them. He wasn’t in the least surprised they were still as tight.

"So what have you guys been up to while I was gone?" he asked. "Other than kidnapping unsuspecting taxidermy?"
