( . . . ) starter call for ( @fires0ut )
uncle eddie was . . . kind of like a best case scenario, but for the worst type of situation to be in. diego missed his parents. a lot. but his uncle really stepped up and was there for diego— more than he ever could have wanted. he was a teenager when the fire happened. too old for a system that didn't always work out for even the youngest kids. foster care would have been a nightmare. diego did stay with a family for a few weeks. and they were . . . they were fine. they were a family. they were nice enough people. but it never felt like home. and diego knew that a place like that never would. he knew he lived a privileged life, more than most of the other kids in the system. he knew he should feel grateful that there was a family willing to take someone like him in. and he was. but he had two parents that loved him. they were great parents. and then they were dead. no one could ever replace that mom and dad shaped hole in his heart. but he already had an eddie in his heart, and a christopher in his heart. so he wasn't replacing anyone.
he still felt like he was a burden sometimes. he was a young adult now, but he was still living at home with eddie. his uncle was a saint, fighting for full custody of christopher and applying for a kinship adoption for teenage diego too. he was so freaking lucky to have an eddie in his life. and he just wanted to return the favor, however he could. he was saving up for a place on his own. well, not alone. with tamara. eddie wouldn't let him pay rent. so he paid him back in other ways. he helped out with chores— laundry, dishes, yard work, he took out the trash and he vacuumed the floors and he cleaned the toilets and the showers and— he was always finding a way to do something, anything to make eddie's life easier. all while doing his candidate year at the 118, another opportunity he was grateful for. he was a lucky kid. and tonight? he made dinner for eddie and christopher. "espero que tengas hambre," he called out when he heard his family came in.
christopher diaz ( @fires0ut ) : kelly finds a bruise of unknown origin on christopher.
eddie was working a shift tonight - which meant kelly had the honors of watching chris. they never called it babysitting, they were simply just ... 'hanging out' and it was some of kelly's favorite downtime in the world. right until they'd eaten dinner ( pizzas and tacos ) and they were about to change into pajamas to hangout on the couch, till the youngest one inevitably fell asleep. if kelly was lucky, he'd have the kid leaning against him. asleep and nuzzled close. but just as he's about to help chris find his set for the night - he notices the ugly looking bruise.
heart starts racing, but he tries to stay cool. no pre-teen wants a parent ( and kelly wasn't even that ) or an adult friend to freak out over something like that. at least not before they get a chance to explain. so kelly leans against the closet, nodding to the bruise on his arm. "where'd you get that one, champ? something you wanna talk about?" might sound like kelly would let it rest if a simple 'no' was the answer - but he wouldn't. hopes it was an accident. but if anyone had been after his favorite little man? oh it was on. kelly wasn't the parent, but he was willing to take some jail time to make sure his kid was safe. everywhere, at home, but also at school. "talk to me, man."
