Jax’s eyes followed every movement that you made, while your own remained on him instead of focusing on the shuffling of the cards, the trick too practiced for you to really need to see what was going on. His brow was furrowed ever so slightly, as he tried to catch the moment when you made the switch.

In the time it took him to blink you quickly turned the pack, knowing that he would have missed it. Then, you fanned the cards out, showing him that they were all face up. Other than his one of course. The dark blue back of the card stood out against the white of the others.

‘All right, how?’ he asked as you plucked the card away carefully and held it out to him. He shook his head, as if not quite believing that he’d missed it all again.

‘Misdirection mainly,’ you said simply, showing him the card at the bottom of the pack which was also the wrong way around. ‘And that’s not even the whole trick.’ You passed the cards off to him. A small part of you was thrilled that he seemed eager to learn about this, even if you couldn’t quite figure out why.

Imagine Making Jax Smile

Imagine sharing a New Year’s kiss with Jax.

The countdown was ringing in my ears, the music finally having been paused so that we could all welcome in the New Year together. I’d lost Jax somewhere in the crowds of people, and even with trying to push through them all I was worried that I might miss him, that somehow I wouldn’t get the chance to be the first person to wish him a happy new year.

‘Jax!’ I called, trying to peer around people as the final ten seconds were called out. We had been doing so well, sticking close to each other throughout the rest of the party, dancing together a little, generally enjoying ourselves even though it was a time way before either of us were even born. Somehow, that had made it even more special.

And now? Now he was gone. Panic flared to life in my chest as the last five seconds began to be called.

In my renewed haste to find him I bumped into someone, their hands gripped my arms, prevented me from falling over.

‘Sorry,’ I said, glancing up at them, only to see the slightly sheepish smile of Jax. Before either of us could say anything else the countdown finally finished. Cheers erupted around the room, people yelling their happy new years to people.

‘Happy New Year, Jax,’ I murmured, before doing something that I didn’t think I’d ever gain the courage to actually do. I kissed him. I cupped my hand at the nape of his neck and pulled him closer to me gently.

He didn’t even seem to miss a beat before he was kissing me back, his own hands resting gently on my waist, pulling me closer to him as I deepened the kiss, spurred on by the fact that he was kissing me back, that he wasn’t pulling away.

After a moment I pulled away, my forehead resting against his, a small smile curling my lips and a little breathless.

‘Happy New Year, (Y/n),’ he murmured, before placing a gentle kiss against my lips.  ‘I can’t believe it took me a year to do that.’

‘Only a year?’ I asked, chuckling softly. ‘Don’t you mean like minus sixty years or something?’

He chuckled, shaking his head a little. ‘I love you,’ he whispered, before pulling away worriedly.

I wetted my lips nervously. ‘I love you too, Jax,’ I said, before moving to kiss him again, the noise of the party seemingly drowned out by the moment. I just hoped that the next year was going to be as good as this.

‘And then this part needs to be glowing blue to prove that it’s working,’ said Jax, pointing towards the little device that was hiding amongst the wires inside a wall of the Waverider. He pulled his hand away and turned to look at you, something like uncertainty shining behind his eyes. ‘Sorry,’ he murmured, deflating a little, ‘I didn’t mean to –’

You shook your head, resting a hand on his arm. ‘Jax, I wanted to learn about this,’ you assured him. You loved the way that his eyes lit with passion as he spoke about the whole thing; you enjoyed seeing him so calm, so fascinated by each thing that he was telling you. But you couldn’t put that into words. ‘So, what does this thing do?’ You leant across him, hand slipping up to his shoulder so that you didn’t fall.

Having Jax with you made the whole Legends thing a little less terrifying; you always had each other’s backs. You were just glad that you could do this to try and thank him for that, letting him ramble about the things he loved when others had brushed it aside.
