FIRST LEGO LEAGUE ROBOTS TOURNAMENT
FIRST LEGO League is a robot building competition, organised by partners of FIRST and LEGO. This competition is open to groups of young people from the world over. They compete on using robotic designs to tackle real life challenges. The age of these kids range from 9 to 16 years, and each team comprises of at most 10 members. The students come together to research real world challenges like pollution, water resources and then they develop a solution. All these are done with the help of an adult coach/mentor.
FIRST LEGO League is the initiative of a partnership between two organisations. FIRST, a charity organisation and LEGO, a toy manufacturing giant.
This alliance was formed in 1998 when Kjeld Kirk Kristiansen who owns of LEGO and Dean Kamen, founder of FIRST came together to develop this program, which is known worldwide as FIRST LEGO League. This program uses play as a tool to help kids learn while also experiencing the beauty in technology and science. Next, each team uses what it’s learned to solve real world problems. The program has been a huge success, as it has over 255,000 participants from 80 countries take part in the yearly competitions. FFL has many other partners who organise the tournaments. Some of these companies also sponsor not just the tournament but teams also.
Usually the students use LEGO MINDSTORMS technology in building robots. And these robots have to pass certain tests. The challenges are designed to test students in the areas of teamwork, innovation, computer programming, research, and STEM.
Other aims of the competition is to help them develop the relevant skills they’ll need as engineers in later years, such as team work, innovation and problem solving just to mention a few.
Every year different countries and cities play host to the teeming number of aspiring engineers coming to show their skills. Just last month in June, Bath University in Bath, Somerset, UK hosted 700 students from the globe over. In FLL Open Championship for Stem (Science Technology Engineering and Maths skills). FLL open championship is its equivalent of a worldwide tournament. The Open Championship was hosted in United Kingdom for the first time ever.
FL Open Championships are hosted more than once a year. In some countries like the US, and the UK where there are many teams, state and national finals have to be organised to determine who would be at the international Open championship.
The FIRST LEGO League Robot Competitions, has helped students improve their STEM scores. This is because they have become more interested in STEM after the competitions. This has also seen college entrants among FIRST LEGO League competitors soar to above 87%. So overall, the program has been a huge success.
The 2017/2018 FFL season is underway, and the theme for this season is Hydrodynamics. Check out their site to see more about the challenge.
