(also small aside but. i wholeheartedly despise the new trend where album names aren't written anywhere on the album cover!!!!!!!)

I compiled a good chunk of my favorite album covers here and I still agree with my statement from back then: "My favorite type of cover relies heavily on a very strong [...] photograph and is ideally paired with some pretty typography." I don't think you can go wrong with that combo, as instant recognizability is arguably one of the most important parts of an album cover. I think that, if your photo (or painting!!! Hello!) is good enough, you can also absolutely get away with the no typography treatment (a bunch of the covers in my compilation do not feature any text), OR you can be extra cool and make the album title part of the cover photo to get the best of both worlds. Speaking of: I actually really like the concept of the SOUR album cover, but once again, I don't love the cropping. This is how I would have done it - apologies for the shitty quality, I didn't find a better photo of the album cover.) Recent additions to my "favorite album covers" list are The Saint Of Lost Causes (the 60s book cover vibes... the way the halo almost looks like a record...) and Ants From Up Here (very simple, but I think both the drawing style and subject are very evocative of childhood, and the cohesiveness of the single covers sells it even more). Ultimately, an album cover should make me feel something (something that isn't hatred, ideally) and give me an idea of what I am getting myself into with the album itself - a pretty image doesn't help when it doesn't fit what we are listening to. Plus: the cover idea should also be something that is able to be translated into back cover, booklets, posters, etc., because better than a cool album cover is a cool album design as a whole.

135. recommend any book you like! HOOL by Philipp Winkler is very very good if you enjoy sad stories about men beating each other up. And a Tiger is there. (Which improves any book, see also: Life Of Pi.)

also hey !! here are some interest album covers i've been listening to recently - would love to know your thoughts on them 💗💗💗

All of these have a Vision behind them, which I can appreciate! The Reunions color palette is a bit muddy for my taste and the picture could be a bit more exciting, but I really like the funky typography for the title. The Good Luck, Kid cover actually caught my eye when a song by Joseph ended up in my shuffle, and I really enjoy the red and the photo and the detailing. More "lots of shit on album covers" please"! Women In Music, Pt. III has the title integrated into the actual photo so of course I looove it. Asha's Awakening suffers from the Parental Advisory Sticker, but I like the "early 2000s fairytale Barbie movie" vibes of it a lot. It's so fun and special and definitely tells me something about what to expect from the music. Same can be said about The Nashville Sound because that cover is really distinct of a specific type of music, but it is a tad basic for my taste. Could be worse though!
