Mandy Barker – Our Plastic Ocean
Question
1. How does the flyer/poster advertise the exhibition?
The flyer for this exhibition is very bright and colourful, this show that some of the images has bright details and a lot of detail within them all. The flyer also shows how much effort of detail that she put into this project as very picture has a different layout and step up between them all. The flyers also give the viewer give a real insight into what barker has done before we have even walked into the exhibition.
2. What is the suitability of the gallery space? Is this appropriate for the work?
The gallery space is very opened planned and has all of her workspace out over two parts of the building. This gives them plenty of space for all of barker’s images as there is quiet a lot of images from this projected. There are also some cabinets with some of the stuff that she found aboard within a lot of different countries but also found some of these where she lives. There is also a map shown you where she found the plastic and how bad it is within certain counties.
3. How has the work been mounted? Is this appropriate for the work?
Most of Barker’s work has been mounted on the wall with a black frame but some of them have been mounted with foam which is very thin, and these are uncovered unlike the other once which are covered with glass and this give you a clear view of the images without the glare.
4. Who made the work?
The photographer who made this was Mandy Barker a British photographer. She is mostly knowing for art and science’s that reveals the global crisis of marine plastic pollution.
5. Who did they make it for, who is the audience?
Mandy Barker made this project to show people around the world what most countries are really like and how much plastic that’s not disappearing so easy than some people within the world thought it was disappearing faster. The audience, she is trying to she this to, is everyone around the world and that includes us.
6. How does it make you feel?
This made me feel shocked as I didn’t realise how bad and how long it takes the plastic to disappears. This makes you think what happen to the animals within the water and the nature. This also make me feel discussed as this could be killing so many animals.
7. If the work has a title, does it make you think about the images differently?
The names for most of her image’s make you think differently about most of them, but the one that made me think differently is Penalty. The reason these makes think different about the images is that it makes you think of the penalty within a football game and as you would have thought of this image of a man standing on a pitch taking a penalty but it not, it just all the penalty balls from many years and I feel like this image is very strong and interesting.
8. How would I describe it to someone later?
I would describe this as an interesting and creative project and every image you look at within the exhibition give you a lot of detail about the image and where the plastic and balls are from, this is shown on a map which is on the second room within the exhibition. I would also describe it as an amazing thing as you don’t realise how much plastic is lying around the world and not disappearing. This is also amazing as there is a lot of detail within the images.
9. Does the photograph make you want to ask questions, what are these questions?
The questions I would ask:
- What made you think about this project?
- How long did you have this project in mind?
- What made you think of the different topics for this project?
10. Is the photograph valuable? How do you know?
I think the photographs are valuable with all the detail and creativity that has went into it, as you can see how much detail and time has gone into this project and how much time she has spent within certain places to find the objects for this project.
11. Is the work for sale and who might buy it?
I am not sure if these piece if these pieces of her work are for sale as I haven’t seen them anywhere online accepted from her Instagram and website. The only other place I have seen them is the street level exhibition. The only people that I think would by it is, the people who are interested within the work she has created and how they feel about them.
12. What information is available about the artist?
There is a lot of information on her website and online about Barker. These tell use all about her and what time of photographer that she is into and what made her interested in certain projects that she does within her work.
13. Who organised the exhibition and who selected the work?
The person who organised this was the guy who owns the street level company, his name is Malcom as he knows a lot about her and the work she does. I think Malcom also selected the print for this exhibition and he choose a good selection of them.
